    homework:

It's 10:00 Universal Time. Here is the news from the Voice of America.

I'm Carmen English from the VOA News Center in Washington.

Authorities in the US state of Virginia are beginning to release the names of some of the victims from yesterday shooting rampage at Virginia Tech University that killed 33 people, including the gunman. One of the dead has been identified as G.V. Loganathan, an engineer professor from India. The gunman killed 32 people, and wounded at least 15 others in two campus locations in the deadliest shooting rampage in US history. Witnesses described terrific scenes as the gunman calmly fired into groups of students hided behind desks. The gunman killed himself before police arrived. Officials have not released his name, nor have they speculated about his motive.

The US Senate and the House of Representatives have observed a moment of silence for the victims of the shootings. Virginian Governor Tim Kaine, who has just arrived in Tokyo for a two-week business tour cut short his visit to return home. At the White House, President Bush expressed his sorrow. VOA's Paula Wolfson reports.

President Bush gave a voice to the thoughts of the American people.

'Today, our nation grieves with those who lost loved ones at Virgina Tech. We hold the victims in our hearts. We lift them up in our prayers, and we ask a loving God to comfort those who are suffering today.'

Across Washington, in the halls of Congress, political foes joined in a moment of silence for the dead - first in the Senate and then in the House. The top Democrat in the Senate, Harry Reid, spoke of the senselessness of the shootings. He said many questions remain unanswered.

'What we do know break out hearts and shakes us to our very core. So for now, the only thing we can do is offer thoughts and our prayers in a very individual way.'

The federal government has offered to help Virginia with its investigation of the tragedy. Officials at Virginia Tech, which is state-owned and run, have defended their handling of the crisis. Students have complained the school was slow to get our information about the first shooting and that a general warning might have prevented further loss of life. Paula Wolfson, VOA news, the White House.

US military says coalition forces in Iraq have detained eight suspected terrorists in raids near Baghdad and the city of Fallujah, west of the capital. A military statement says the raids were carried out today and that six of the detainees are allegedly linked to the al-Qaida terrorist network. The statement says the two other detainees are suspected of having ties insurgents using car bombs in the Baghdad area.

Separately, the militay says a dump truck overturned north of Baghdad late Monday, revealing a payload of nitric acid and explosives. It says the drivers of the truck confessed he was paid to attack a joint U.S. and Iraqi security forces compound in the town of Mashahda, north of Baghdad. The military also says an investigation into Monday's operation against suspected al-Qaida militants in Ramadi has revealed that the three men killed during the raid were not Iraqi policemen as first reported. Earlier, the military said the Iraqi policemen were killed in case of 'friendly fire.'

Reports from South Korea say North Korea may be preparing to close its nuclear reactor which is at the center of a stalled six-nation nuclear disarmament process.

South Korean media say U.S. satellite images showed increased activity around the Yongbyon reactor, with unusual movement of people and vehicles. The reports come after North Korea missed the Saturday deadline to implement the February six-party agreement.

Police in southern Afghanistan say a roadside bomb blast has hit a United Nations vehicle killing one Afghan man and four security guards from Nepal. An UN spokesman comfirms there wasn't an accident but did not provide details. Elsewhere, officials say the explosion today outside a school in the western Afghan city Herat killed at least three children. Details of that incident are not yet clear.
