It has recently been announced that Al Gore has won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.  The former Vice President of the US has won the prestigious award for his efforts in raising awareness of the dangers of global warming, and for being a leading campaigner in the fight to reduce the world reliance on fossil fuels.

The ￡750,000 prize will be shared between Gore and the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which is the UN panel established over two decades ago to investigate the science of man-made warming.  Gore has stated that he plans to donate his share of the prize money to the Alliance for Climate Protection, a non-profit organisation devoted to changing public opinion about the urgency of solving the climate crisis.

Even before the announcement, Gore had been widely tipped to win the Nobel Peace Prize.  His name now sits alongside an illustrious list of revolutionary campaigners, including the likes of Mother Teresa and Martin Luther King.
