考研补习语法词汇之-ED Participles

-ED Participles
I. Uses of two –ed participles of the same verb:
1.    bend: bent and bended: on oneˊs bended knees
2.    bind:bound and bounden: his bounden duty, be bound to do sth.
3.    drink: drunk and drunken: a drunken person
4.    shrink: shrunk and shrunken: shrunken clothes
5.    sink: sunk and sunken: a sunken ship
6.    melt: melted and molten: molten steel
7.    light: lit and lighted: a lighted candle
Note: All the –ed participles above ending in –en can usually be used as pre-modifiers of nouns.
8.    strike: struck and stricken: a terror-stricken girl,  be stricken with (患。。。病)
9.    bear: born and borne: be born in or on or of…..
His plan has not borne any fruit.
All the children borne to him by the fat woman are fools.
10.    hang: hanged and hung
II. Functions of the –ed participles:
1.    subject & object:
The accused has been declared innocent.
A doctor should rescue the dying and heal the wounded.
2.    modifiers of nouns:
a.    when the –ed part. from vt. used as attributive has passive and complete meanings while the –ing part. has active and incomplete meanings:
e.g. a recorded talk        a recording machine
b.    when –ed part. from vi. used as attributive has active and complete meanings while the –ing part. has active and incomplete meanings:
e. g. the risen sun          the rising sun
c.    Some –ed participles can be used as pre-&post-modifiers, but have different meanings:
e.g. an involved problem (复杂的)    the people involved (相关的)
with a concerned look(关切的)    the people concerned
at a given place (特定的)        the gift given to her(给予的)
a used bike (旧的)              the method used(使用的)
3.    subject complement & object complement:
The door remains locked.
I found the door locked.
The door was found locked.
Gone are the days when my heart is young and gay.
I have seen a human being killed.
4. adverbial of reason, time, condition, manner or circumstances:
(When/If) heated, water changes into steam.
Though surrounded, the soldiers were not discouraged.
Note: The subject of the main clause is logically the object of the –ed participle. If not, the sentence will be wrong.
e.g. Painted white, we like the house more.*  We can change it into a nominative absolute construction: The house painted white, we like it more.
