Love is giving

Much room is left for us to discuss after watching the classic English movie <Casablanca>, which is considered to be the most successful love movie in history. The question whether it is a wise choice for Ilsa to choose Victor at last is under debating.

Someone thinks that the one Ilsa loved most is Rick instead of Victor, and the reason why Ilsa went with Victor is just because of responsibility—she is Victor’s wife. But I do not think so.

In my opinion, Ilsa’s true love is Victor, I admit that she used to love Rick, but that is something before. At that very time, Ilsa just thought that her dear husband had been dead, suffering from the great disaster, Ilsa met Rick, the fell in love with each other, but fortunately to Ilsa and unfortunately to Rick, Victor was alive, so at the last time

It is needed that we should give a definition to love. It is really difficult because love is just a kind of feeling. However, if I have to define it, I will say that love is giving.

There is one scenery impressed me greatly:

After having been told that Ilsa can leave Casablanca to American alone, Ilsa refused firmly

Ilsa: But Victor, if the situation were different…if I had to stay and there were only one visa for one, would you take it?

Victor: Ye-es, I would.

Ilsa: Yes, I see. When I had trouble getting out of Lille, why didn’t you leave me there? And when I was sick in Marseilles and held you up for two weeks and you were in danger every minute of the time, why didn’t you leave me then?

From it, we can see the love between them was so deep that they were willing to do everything to each other, even risk their lives. That is true love if we think love is giving.


There are comments that if the movie ended up with Ilsa stay with Rick, it won’t be so successful. Because that the end just show us that love is giving. “Here is looking at you.” The last wishes Rick gave to Ilsa. If you love somebody from your deep heart, you should treat her happiness as you own, let her go and give your best regards to her.

“You must remember this, a kiss is just a kiss, a sigh is just a sigh”, this wonderful song impressed me very much, especially the lyric, I think in some degree, it just shows the relationship between Ilsa and Rick, they used to love each other, and this song was the witness of them, but everything is changing as time goes by…


Love is giving. The love should not be limited in love between valentines; love between family members can clarify this point of view as well and maybe more clearly. The love to their country is also a clue of this movie.


“I stick my neck out for nobody” was the pet phase of Rick at the very beginning, which showed his cool personality, to anyone and to the destiny of his country. But in the end, Rick returned to the real Rick, love is giving, you give something to others, you will gain the happiness of your own and realize your value.
