Wireless communication systems: orthogonal or non-orthogonal?
Abstract：In this talk we will present a comparative study on orthogonal and non
-orthogonal multiple access schemes. We will show that the non-orthogonal approa
ch has a spectral-power efficiency advantage (the so-called multi-user gain) ove
r the orthogonal approach for delay sensitive applications in fading environment
s. In many situations, the multi-user gain is significant (e.g., > 10dB) and is
worthy of our further research attention. Furthermore, we will show that this th
eoretical advantage can be turn into reality based on the recent progress in tra
nsmission and detection techniques involving turbo iterative principles.

About the Speaker：
Prof. Li Ping received his Ph.D. degree at Glasgow University in 1990. He lectur
ed at Department of Electronic Engineering, Melbourne University, from 1990 to 1
992, and worked as a research staff at Telecom Australia Research Laboratories f
rom 1993 to 1995. He has been with the Department of Electronic Engineering, Cit
y University of Hong Kong, since January 1996 where he is now a professor. Prof
. Li Ping received a British Telecom - Royal Society Fellowship in 1986, the IEE
J J Thomson premium in 1993 and the Croucher Foundation Award in 2005.
