Rocks painter, winemaking technical manager, Robert Mondavi Winery, Napa Valley, California, a C Bordeaux varietal specialist and consultant on winegrowing practices, share his insides long with an extensive collection of interviews from wine industry experts inside wineworks. The list of wine professionals includes the first person in the world to attain both of master of wine and master Somogyi title, California and Washington state winemakers, wineries and restaurant owners, the former west coast editor of Wine Spectator magazine, as well as representatives from leading wine services and product suppliers.

Wine, one of our most profound culinary achievements. Wine has been a part of our culture for as long as man has recorded history. Early civilizations from the Nile to the Persian Gulf were known to have produced wine. Greeks and Romans were responsible for distributing the vines and their wine making knowledge throughout Europe. Closer to home, in the late 1700s, Thomas Jefferson traveled to Europe, and fell in love with the wines of France. He shipped the best vines and grape cuttings home to Virginia, and encouraged wine consumption and production in the new American Colonies. To Jefferson's dismay, the climate on the eastern coast of North America was not conducive for grape growing. And the first attempt at winemaking in the new world did not prove fruitful.
"They had originally arrived in North America, with the early settlers on the east coast. But they quickly discovered that the humidity and climate was not appropriate for the cultivation of grapevine."
France had been intensively cultivated by the Romans, who established many vineyard whose reputation dates back to the time of Shulamite. France continued to specialize on its vineyards during Medieval Times, and by the early 17th century had become known as greatest wine producing country.
A group of Franciscan missionaries traveling into California to establish missions first introduced the European grapevines to the west coast of North America, in the early 1700s.
Grapevines tend to thrive in regions that are situated on the western side of continents.
Unlike the first attempt at winemaking on the east coast, wine production on the western coast of North America in the early 1800s became successful and started to flourish. However, in 1880, a small insect brought the worldwide wine industry to an abrupt halt.
The Phylloxera is an insect that lives in the soil. It attacks the roots of the grapevine and by feeding on the root, seriously impairs the vine's ability to absorb nutrients and water from the soil
