Officials say a battle between Iraqi troops and Shiite militia men in the south of the country has left at least 34 people dead. The fighting began late Sunday in the Shiite majority city of D/. Authorities say Iraqi security forces carried out raids there and collecting illegal weapons from militia men of the Mahdi army. Hospital officials say 25 Iraqi soldiers were killed in the fighting, along with 7 civilians and at least 2 Shiite militia men. The Mahdi Army fighters are loyal to radical Shiite cleric M/ who heads affection of the Iraqi government. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has vowed to dispend militias as part of his national reconsolidation plan. Earlier today, a suicide car bomber blew himself up outside the Interior Ministry in Baghdad. 16 people were killed and more than 40 wounded.

United Nations' Secretary General Kofi Annan met with Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora in Beirut today to discuss the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah guerillas. Mr. Annan said he wanted to discuss the aftermath of the war and implementation of the UN ceasefire resolution and to underscore international solidarity regarding Lebanon. Lebanese leaders want Mr. Annan to pressure Israel in the lifting its air and sea blockade of Lebanon. The UN chief also is to visit Israel, Syria and Iran.

The Italian cabinet is meeting to discuss and vote on deploying Italian troops to Lebanon as we hear from S.Franco in Rome.

Approval of the degree giving the go-ahead to Italy's mission to Lebanon is widely expected. Italy has already said it is prepared to send up to 3,000 soldiers, the largest pledge by European nation for the UN peacekeeping force that is to secure the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah guerillas in south Lebanon. The degree will also give details of the measures to help reconstruction efforts in Lebanon. Italian government officials are stressing the importance of the Italian mission. Foreign Minister Massimo D'Alema says Italian troops are not leaving for a war. He said they are going to defend and consolidate peace. And they will pass towards to transport the Italian troops scheduled to depart from the southern Italian port Tuesday and to reach Lebanon on Friday. S/ for VOA news, Rome.

Turkey says it has agreed to contribute troops to the expand of UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon. The move will require the approval of the Turkish Parliament.

Israeli forces operating in Gaza have killed 4 Palestinian members of a Hamas-led security force. Palestinian officials say the 4 men were killed early Monday by an Israeli missile strike on a neighborhood street in Gaza city. The officials say the man served under the Palestinian Interior Ministry which is controlled by the ruling Hamas militant group. The Israeli military confirmed the attack but said 2 militants were killed by Israeli ground troops while another 2 were killed by an air strike.

A suspected suicide bomb attack in southern Afghanistan has killed 17 people and wounded almost 50. VOA's Benjamin Send reports from Islamabad.

Officials say the bomb went off Monday in the middle of a crowded market area in L/, capital of H/ Province. Interior Ministry spokesman / blamed the attack on enemies of the state for fray is typically used to refer to Taliban insurgents. "This is a terrorist act which has killed the senseless civilians and children." Afghanistan insurgents are increasingly borrowing tactics from their counterparts in Iraq. This was one of the bloodiest suicide attacks in Afghanistan today what has already been the country's deadliest year since US forces ousted the Taliban regime in 2001. New riots have been erupted in southwestern Pakistan where people are protesting the killing of a popular B/ nationalist of rebel chief by government forces Saturday. A strike...A massive strike has virtually shut down the rest of the B/ province and opposition lawmakers in Islamabad avoid outrage over the death of /. They accused the government of murdering a / political opposition leader. The government has named B/, blaming him for sponsoring terrorist attacks.
