Bridges are the superstars of engineering. We may admire the skyscrappers for their grandeur, and we can respect the sheer effort it takes to build the tunnel. But briges are loved, unlike many other human creations, a great bridge can enhance the beauty of its setting. But though all their glammor, the first duty of a bridge is to fufill its function, providing safe crossings over impossible throughtways . A great bridge, such as Japan's new Akas... , combines good looks with functionality. As we shall see, this enormous span broke all the records for height and length. Yet in many ways, it is one of the most conservatively designed bridges of the twenty century. At three and a half miles long, the Akas.. is impossible to ignore.
