Recently, there has arisen a contentious debate over whether people should be forced to retire at a certain age. From my point of view, I am strongly against mandatory retirement.

It is undeniable that mandatory retirement has its merits, that is to say, it can make older people enjoy the remaining life and create more job opportunities for young people.

However, we should never lose sight of its demerits. Mandatory retirement is a brazen infringement on people’s right to work, which they desire to create something and make more contribution to the society.

Additionally, the 21st century is known as the era of lifelong learning and lifelong working. Besides, in the future, a declining may give rise to a shortage of skilled and knowledgeable employees, which will, consequently, seriously affect the productivity of organizations. Studies have shown that many ageing workers continue to work at maximum efficiency and that age-related changes had little effect on their productivity unless they had jobs that were physically demanding. Take scientists as an example, many of whom are over 60 or even older are still working and they play an important role in the development of technologies. And it is known that most of leaders in our government are old enough to retire, but they still remain in work force and make our country wealthier and more stable. Consequently, it makes no sense to propel an old but healthy and experienced worker to disengage from work place.

Taking into account all the factors mentioned above, we may reasonably arrive at the conclusion that healthy people should not be forced to retire at a certain age, while those who are not healthy enough to work for a long period can retire earlier. As we know, older workers represent a source of experience, accumulated knowledge and wisdom.
