From NPR news in Washington, I'm Nora Raum.

British military officials say two British helicopters collided in the air north of Baghdad today. British Defense Secretary Des Browne says two people were killed and at least one person was wounded. He said initial reports are that it was an accident. In Baghdad today two car bombs exploded 5 minutes apart in a mainly Shiite neighborhood. Iraqi police say at least 15 people were killed and 50 others were wounded. The BBC's Jim Muir reports from Baghdad.
Despite the big security search by American and Iraqi troops in Baghdad, the bombings go on virtually everyday. In these latest attacks, people said a car bomb went off near a crowded street market in a mainly Shiite district in Southwest Baghdad. As rescuers were trying to cope with the aftermath and get survivors to hospital, a second car exploded just a few meters away causing further casualties and then to add to the chaos, a mortar round was fired into the area shortly after that. The BBC's Jim Muir reporting from Baghdad.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas are to meet at this hour at Ehud's home in Jerusalem. They agreed to talk every two weeks at the request of the United States. This will be the first of the series. Olmert aides say he's prepared to discuss the legal, economic and governmental structures of a further Palestinian state. A senior advisor to Mahmoud Abbas said people should not expect this one meeting to perform miracles.

New Jersey state police have identified the driver of a pick-up truck that apparently caused an accident involving governor Jon Corzine last week. Jon Corzine is in the hospital recovering from surgery. Brad Linder reports.
Doctors have claimed a 6-inch wound at governor Corzine's left leg. The governor is breathing with the help of a ventilator, but he is expected to make a full recovery. His vehicle was involved in an accident on Thursday evening. The driver of a white pick-up truck swerved to avoid a red pick-up truck that had pulled off the road. The white truck veered into the governor’s SUV. State troopers say they’ve identified the driver of the red truck as a 20-year-old Atlantic City casino employee. He says he was unaware that he caused the accident when he pulled away from the scene. No charges have been filed against the driver, but a police spokesperson says the investigation will take several weeks to conclude. For NPR news, I'm Brad Linder.

A murder suspect surrendered to police late last night in Tulsa Oklahoma after a 3-hour standoff that had been hold up in an apartment complex when the police were called. Spokesman Scott Welln said when police arrived they encountered a hostile crowd.
"They were met by a large group, over a hundred people that made an effort to assault oldsters by drawing objects, rocks at his vehicle, at adultsters who were shot far. The else, they had their hand full at that time to contain the crowd and had the suspect contained to one building." Reinforcements were called in to disburse the crowd and the suspect gave himself up.

A powerful storm is moving in to the northeast US today, the same system that brought snow to the plains in the past few days. Weather forecasters expected 40 mile per hour winds and a storm surge of 3 to 4 feet on Long Island which could see some of its worst flooding in 14 years.

Protestors across the nation gathered yesterday to urge Congress to do more to reduce global warming. Jessica Golloher of member station WAUM was at the rally in Washington DC.
Demonstrators took to the national mall and what organizers are calling, the largest ever citizen action effort to reduce green house submissions. They are demanding that Congress reduce CO2 emissions by 80% by the year 2050. Gary Cook attended the rally. He says he thinks that the demonstrations will have an effect. “Certainly look at history, it always has before many many times. It's really showing people in DC, in all across country, in local congressional districts that is an issue people care about." Demonstrations were held from Maine to Hawaii and Seattle to Key West. For NPR news, I'm Jessica Golloher in Washington.

The Orlando Sentinel is preparing that NASA has paid 24.6 million dollars to the families of astronauts who died in the Space Shuttle Columbia in 2003. The paper obtained documents under the freedom of information act that showed that former FBI director William Webster help negotiated the settlement out of court. The documents don't provide a breakdown of how much each family received. Congress had aside money for a settlement in 2004. Investigation found the Columbia came apart during reentry because of a damage caused when a piece of insulating foam broke off during liftoff. All 7 astronauts died.
