首先我們要修改系統的軟體源列表。關於什麼是軟體源，請參考軟體源。
1. 請確保你的系統已聯入互聯網。不會設置的請看HOW-TO連接到互聯網 。
2. 打開一個終端。打開終端的方法是：單擊主菜單中的“應用程式 - 附件 - 終端”。關於終端的使用，請參考基本終端命令。
3. 修改你的更新伺服器列表。請在終端中執行下麵的兩條命令：
sudo cp /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list_backup
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
註意:接下來在打開的文本編輯器中，把你看到的內容全部刪掉，訪問我們推薦的源 8.04頁面。在那裡里請選擇一組對於你來說速度最快的更新伺服器列表。粘貼到你所看到的視窗中。

4.更新軟體包列表。執行下麵的命令：

5.安裝系統更新
打開“系統->系統管理->更新管理器”，安裝更新。完成後若系統提示重新啟動，請重新啟動系統。

* 打開“語言支持”對話框（見右圖）。單擊主菜單中的“系統(System) --> 系統管理(Administration) --> 語言支持(language support)”。
* 在“支持的語言”列表中找到“漢語（Chinese）”，在右端打上勾。同時將預設語言修改為“漢語（Chinese）”並勾選“啟用複雜字元輸入支持（Enable support to enter complex characters）”，點擊確定按鈕。
Ubuntu 這時會下載並安裝語言包。安裝完畢之後，當你註銷後重新登錄，界面就變成中文的了。
* 如果你喜歡用 Adobe Reader 來閱讀 pdf 文檔，可在官網下載或者本地下載
* 設置文檔查看器 Evince 的中文支持：

星際譯王(stardict)是 Linux 下類似於金山詞霸的辭典軟體。要安裝星際譯王，請執行下麵的命令：
sudo apt-get install stardict stardict-common stardict-plugin stardict-plugin-espeak stardict-plugin-festival
* 已加入 ubuntu-cn 源的用戶，可以通過下麵的命令安裝 stardict 的詞典文件：
sudo apt-get install stardict-cdict-gb stardict-cedict-gb stardict-hanzim stardict-langdao-ce-gb stardict-langdao-ec-gb stardict-oxford-gb stardict-xdict-ce-gb stardict-xdict-ec-gb
* 未加入 ubuntu-cn 源的用戶，到星際譯王的詞典網頁或者本地鏡像，挑選自己需要用的詞典，下載到自己的主目錄下。現在以安裝文件名為a.tar.bz2 的詞典為例：
tar -xjvf a.tar.bz2
sudo mv a /usr/share/stardict/dic
註意：a.tar.bz2是詞典文件，a 是解壓出來的詞典目錄
如果需要給 stardict 添加更多的詞庫或真人發音，請訪問星際譯王

大功告成，現在我們的系統已經能很好的工作了。請註銷重新進入桌面！
很好，對Ubuntu系統的基本設置，你已經完成。不過這些設置對於你來說遠遠不夠，請參看可選設置條目繼續對您的系統進行微調，當然可選設置里的內容不是所有人必須要做的。請針對自己的情況有選擇的操作。
不錯，可選設置看完了，你一定還想安裝自己需要的軟體，比如ftp軟體，看chm什麼的，忘掉windows下的工具吧。我們可以用開源/自由軟體代替它閃。軟體推薦條目放置了一份清楚的清單，相信其中有你想要的東東。
