Good evening, ladies and gentlemen,
The title of my speech today is, Unity of Purpose, Diversity of Minds..
Look around this room and what do you see? We are as diverse a people as what you can see with your own eyes, yet we as a people are dedicated to the same human issues of every generation. We seek peace and prosperity for ourselves, our nation and our world. In that cause we are united.
What accomplishes much is a diversity of ideas. Without fresh thought and inspiration great ideas and movements die. Nations rise and fall and history is their judge. Even the greatest of nations is short lived when it fails to recognize the very causes for its demise.
What then strengthens us as a nation? Our sense of purpose... and no one is left out who wants to participate in making China a world leader. There is much for us to draw upon. We may learn from the failures of the past and keep our hopes for the future. What we cannot be is divided. It is a known military strategy that says: "Divide and conquer". During the American Civil War, Abraham Lincoln said as much by quoting from his Christian faith the words of Jesus. "A house divided against itself cannot stand". History proves this true time and time again.
The human mind is an awesome thing. In our modern times we've seen the eradication of diseases that earlier generations would have thought impossible. Modern China is such a long distance from the early days
of the Empire. We are proudly able to stand among nations and participate as world leaders. How did this occur? Our unity of purpose, our diversity of minds.
There is still much ahead of us. For the challenges ahead we need to be no less united. The great events of our times are shaped by things we cannot see clearly for they are in the distance. What we can be comforted by is that we already have all we need to face the unknown times ahead. We are many. We are strong. We are China. It is enough so long as we remain united, one with another and remain as diverse in skills and ideas as we are today.
