This is Chery Automobile company, China's largest and arguably most advanced home grown car-maker.Few foreign reporters have been allowed inside the gates of its sprawling manufacturing complex.,here in the Yangtze river city of Wuhu.this year ,the company expects to sell more than 400 thousand cars and suvs,about a fifth will be exported to places like Russia and the Middle-east,by 2010, Chery plans to be making 1 million vehicles annually,that's quite an achievement for a company that little more than ten years ago didn't even exist. Chery was the brainchild of commuinist party officials in the poor province of Anhui. Chery is a hybrid of traditional Chinese government enterprise and entreprenurial startup business.the company is taking off partly from the rapid growth of china's domestic car market .Shifts in the global auto industry have also made it easier for Chery to get hold of sophisticated automotive technology. The Chery success shows what happens when you marry china's relatively low-wage labor with large capital investments.Chery has fitted out its factory with high-tech equipment from Germany and Italy, paired that with double shifts, junior engineers who earn about 6000 dollars a year and assembly line workers paid about a dollar an hour.and you have a powerful business combination. Chery's success is drawing big name auto parts companys like Delphi and Arvin Meritor in the US ,here to Wuhu

last July, Chery landed a deal with Crysler to make a range of small cars to be sold world-wide under Crysler's Dodge frame. if all goes well ,those Chery made Dodges could be on sale in Latin America/ and other developing markets by some time next year.the cars will need some work to meet safety quality and environmental standards in developed countries, Crysler says. But once Chery overcomes those hurdles, its cars could start showing up in the US and western Europe as soon as 2009.this is Gordon Fairclough reporting for the Wall Street Journal.
