From NPR news in Washington, I'm Carl Kasell.

In Iraq 4 years ago, US soldiers put down the statue of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein in the center of Baghdad to cheers of Iraqis. It was a different scene in the capital today with tens of thousands of Iraqis demonstrated against the US military presence and demanding the troop's leave. NPR's Jamie Tarabay reports from the Iraqi capital.
At least 100,000 men and boys carrying Iraqi flags of all sizes marched to the southern city of Najaf. Some held banners calling for the occupiers to leave. One said “No, No to America." While another said "Yes, Yes to Moqtada." Moqtada al-Sadr is the powerful Shiite cleric who called on the Iraqis to raise the Iraqi flag and use this state to join together and demand the US and its coalition leave Iraq. As testament to his influence, Iraqis in recent days posted Iraqi flags on their cars, outside their shops to the point where the price of flags went up to accommodate the increased demand. There was little activity in the capital. The Iraqi government has imposed a 24-hour curfew banning vehicles from the street until Tuesday. Jamie Tarabay NPR news, Baghdad.

The chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee says there will be no cut-off for funds for the war in Iraq next year, However senator Carl Levin told ABC that the Senate should keep pressing President Bush to make Iraqi leaders reach a political settlement. The President wants more than 100 billion dollars to pay for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan this year. The House and Senate have attested the timelines for troop to come home prompting Mr. Bush to promise a veto.

President Bush has scheduled to be in Arizona today for his two-focus on the issue of immigration. NPR's Paul Brown has more on that story.
Mr. Bush is to inspect construction of border fencing in the Yuma Arizona area. In a speech he will also press for creation of a guest worker program, and a pass to citizenship for illegal immigrants. He's hoping for a more cooperation from a democratic-led Congress than it had from the previous Republican led Congress, and many Democrats do want some sort of immigration overhaul. But positions on immigration don't fall entirely along party lines. There were concerns among both Democrats and Republicans about how to uphold immigration law without disrupting lives and negatively affecting the workforce in agriculture and industry. Further complicating matters Mr. Bush's relations with Congress are sticky because of Iraq and the firing of 8 federal prosecutors. Paul Brown NPR news, Washington.

Prices on the Tokyo Stock Exchange closed higher today. The Nikkei Average rose by nearly 259 points. Oil prices fell in Asian trading today. US light crude for May delivery fell 44 cents to $63.84 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

    This is NPR news.

Media and Human rights advocacy groups are calling for a legally banning international convention to protect and defend the rights of journalists as the number of kidnap and murder journalists continues to rise. Lisa Schlein reports from Geneva.
The 1969 Geneva Convention is the only international legal protection that exits for journalists, but UN human rights expert Ambeyi Ligabo says it protects them as civilians, but as members of a profession deserving special care. "This protection without delay needs be enlarged to all media professionals, to reinforce by specific preventive measures. The killing of media professionals should be indicated in the international legislation on war and war crimes.” Ligabo believes a legally-binding treaty will provide greater rights in protection for journalists. A recent report finds more than 1000 journalists and support staff were killed in the last ten years, more than 200 of them in Iraq alone since 2003. For NPR news, I'm Lisa Schlein in Geneva.

Newt Gingrich is joined the list of Republicans calling for the resignation of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. Appearing on Fox news Sunday, Gingrich criticized Gonzales' judgment in allowing the firings of 8 US attorneys to become a political scandal. Earlier this year, Gonzales insisted that the dismissals were based on performance and were not politically motivated, but emails between the Justice Department and the White House contradicted those claims and prompted a public apology from Gonzales. Gingrich calls the controversy the most mishandle, artificial, self-created mess he has ever seen in his years as public service.
