Very good Saturday morning to you. I’m Veronica De La Cruz at the CNN center in Atlanta. Let’s take a look at what’s happening right Now In The News.

Iranian media are reporting that British navy personnel have confessed to being in Iranian waters when they were seized. Britain is demanding Iran return the 15 sailors and marines taken at the Persian Gulf on Friday. London maintained its troops were in Iraqi waters when they were detained.

An al-Qaeda linked terrorist group is claiming responsibility for an assassination attempt against Sunni Deputy Prime Minister. The suicide bomb blast killed 9 people. The Deputy Prime Minister is said to be in good condition.

And in Southern Baghdad Saturday, a suicide bombing outside a police station killed at least 20 people and wounded 26 others.

President Bush says it would be dead on arrival if any Iraq withdrawal bill reaches his desk. But that threat is not stopping Democrats from savoring their narrow victory. The spending bill the House passed yesterday includes a firm deadline of August 2008 for combat troops to leave Iraq. It also includes an emergency 124 billion dollars for the war. Mr. Bush quickly fired off a public response saying the House has abdicated its responsibility to protect the troops. The Senate begins debate on its version of the bill on Monday.

Not even passionate pleas from dozens of supporters could help save the job of a Florida city manager who wants a sex-change operation. After a 6-hour hearing yesterday, Largo City commissioners voted to a polled last month firing of Steve Stanton. Stanton created a stir last month when he announced he was pursuing plans to live life as Susan Stanton and wanted to keep his job of 14 years. Commissioners said that caused work disruption in the city and decided to fire him. His contract says he can be fired without cause.

A chemical used to make rat poison has been found in the Menu brands pet food recalled last week. Scientists say it was found in the “cuts and gravy” style pet food. It kept chemical that’s banned for use in the United States. And government investigators don’t know how the poison got into the food. Menu Foods has expanded the recall to include all 95 brands of its “cuts and gravy” food products. 15 cats and 1 dog are reported to have died so far and no criminal investigation has been started.
