Just days before crucial mid-term elections, the Bush administration has been facing withering criticism over its Iraq policies. In a joint editorial, four military newspapers are calling for the resignation of the Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld who they said was responsible for US failures in Iraq. It’s also emerged that senior advisors who played a key role in making the case for the Iraqi War are now expressing serious doubts about the operation. Jonathan Bill reports from Washington.
The Military Times, the in has magazine to many serving in the US army, navy and air force is the latest to call on President Bush to fire his beleaguered Defense Secretary. Its editorial says that Donald Rumsfeld has lost the credibility of the uniformed leadership, troops, congress and the public at large, there are strong criticism, too, from former loyal Republicans over the whole handling of the war. W.A., a former defense advisor to the Bush administration says in hindsight he probably would not have advocated the invasion.
Extra security measures were enforced in Iraq in advance of the expected verdict on Sunday in the first trial of the deposed Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. A special curfew has been imposed in Baghdad and the city's international airport has been closed. Army leave was cancelled and troops were put on alert for any reaction to the trial verdict. Saddam Hussein is accused of murdering 148 people from the village of Dujail after an assassination attempt there in 1982. The Iraqi interior military said police have been involved in fierce fighting with gunmen in the southern outskirts of Baghdad. The spokesman said 53 gunmen and four policemen have been killed with a further 16 gunmen captured. The spokesman said police have been acting on information that a number of people have been held hostage in the area, the district of W.

A woman bishop has for the first time assumed the leadership of Anglican church of America known there as the episcopal church. Bishop KJ who was elected in June received the primatial staff ,the symbol of whole authority from her predecessor FG at a ceremony in Washington. 3000 people looked on as native Americans burned sacred herbs and dancers waved bright banners. But the BBC Washington correspondent says some American bishops refused to accept bishop S’s authority because of her sex and her support for gay members of the clergy. The bishop herself expects to convince * in time.
“I don’t think it’s a majority, it's clearly there are handful who are unhappy with my election ,a handful for whom this presents a significant challenge probably because they simply have little experience of working with women in positions of authority and leadership. Yet you know that we can get past that. ”

People born as a part of a Nazi program aimed at strengthening what they saw as racially valuable traits have met in the eastern town of Wernigerode. The program was called Lebensborn and it / supported pregnant women, some of them unmarried, who were considered racially pure. For years many of the Lebensborn children were too ashamed to discuss their background in public and many of them still don't know who their parents were. One of them is F.
"There was always a feeling inside that something was not quite right which was disturbing. If one doesn't have mother, father, any roots at all. It’s disturbing, but now I'm in my sixtieth year and have more time to look and search for them."

A continuing Israeli military offensive in the Gaza strip killed at least nine more Palestinians on Saturday. Most were militants including a Hamas commander but a 12-year-old girl was also shot dead. Israeli tanks and troops bent a fourth day at the town of B searching for militants who they say have been firing rockets into Israel.
The town of B is the center of this Israeli operation. For four days it's been under the control of huge force, tanks and troops. They told local people to keep off the streets and stay at home and that is where 12-year-old * was when she was shot in the head and killed. The army says that one of its soldiers have been aiming for a gunman but missed and hit the little girl. A senior United Nations official who was given Israel permission to enter B described the atmosphere there as one of death, destruction and despair.

In what correspondents are calling an unusually optimistic statement, a senior advisor to the Hamas-led Palestinian government says agreement on a national unity administration is just days away. The advisor * also said a deal on a prisoner exchange between the Israel and Palestinians was imminent. There has been no comment from any of the other parties to his statement made in an interview with the Associated Press news agency.
