A high speed magnetic train has crashed during an experimental run in northwestern Germany, killing almost all those on board. A police spokesman said 25 people were known to have died when the train known as Transrapid smashed into a maintenance vehicle. The train was traveling alone a mile rail test track when it crashed near the town of Lathen. Our Berlin correspondent TR reports.

The train had been travelling at around 125 miles an hour when it collided with the maintenance vehicle which was on the track. Such was the impact of the crash that rackage was scattered over a large area. The rescue operation was difficult because the train was on an elevated track and emergency services struggled to reach the carriages. The German authorities have now launched an investiagtion. According to initial reports from prosecutors, the crash was caused by human error, possibly a failure of radio communication but many questions remian unanswered.

Foreign ministers of the United Nations Security Council and ten other nations have been meeting in New York to discuss the crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan. The American Secretary of States warned that time was running out and she accused Sudan of failing to protect its own citizens.

The Italian government responding to concerns over an illegal phone tapping has passed a decree banning the media from publishing the contents of such surveillance. Newspapers could be fined at a maximun of about one and a half million dollars if found guilty of breaking the new law. The measure was announced after an emergency meeting of the Italian cabinet which considered allegations that politicians, businessmen and sport stars have been spied on. CF reports from Rome.

The government's decision to ban the use of phone tap material comes just a few days after (the) police rounded up 21 suspects including the former head of Security Telecomic Italy who's allegedly to be part of the same spying.

The group had collected sensitive information for several years including phones and bank account records. The investiagtors said part of the information they gathered came from illegaly tapped telephone conversations all stolen from police in government databases. Their motives are still unclear. But politicians on all sides have expressed deep concerns.

The Japanese space agency has launched a new space probe to explore the sun. The solar B probe persisted by America and Britain will observe the sun from the earth orbit. Our science correspondent PG has the details.

The solar B space craft will provide the clearest pictures to date of the sun's tempestuous atmosphere and its twisting magnetic fields. In particular, it will observe how solar flares develop. These are tremendously powerful explosions that occur on the sun surface. Each one releases energy equivalent to tens of millions of atom bombs and holds planet side trunks of into space. These particles can interfere with electronic systems on earth. It's hoped that the results from the mission would help scientists to predict when these flares will occur.

The European commission is to recommend and Buldaria join the European Union on January the first next year would be a twist of some reservations. The move will boost the number of EU members to 27. The report which will only be published on Tuesday says both countries have made progress in their preparations. But it also raises the prospective sanctions if they do not make further reforms after joining the EU
