Install Nvidia Drivers on ubuntu 6.10

i am sorry i haven't got my SCIM right for typing chinese...(new bee here)

i've downloaded the NVIDIA official driver on its website for linux, but unable to install....

the installer tells me to shut X window firstly to continue, i've tried many ways in ubuntu to shut X, but none successful...
if i change runlevel to 2 or 1 , x window is shutted down but the installer need runlevel 3 to install. every time i switch to runlevel 3, the x window will be loaded automatically...( because it's UBUNTU? )

a NB person told me to change the default setting of boot up in the /etc/inittab file. but it does not even exist in ubuntu.......

finally, i installed a glx driver from apt-get, but it cannot work: the x window cannot start......
so i removed the glx driver and before restart, run the nvidia installer...bingo.......

i have to say this is too wiered... have the nvidia driver be installed in this way?

may somebody help me answer the question. Thanks a lot.

英文不好，只看了个大概，不过基本还是知道了楼主的意思了。有关ubuntu的详细内容，参看此帖：http://192.168.2.8/bbs/read.php?tid=222445&fpage=1
在登陆ubuntu的时候，要用root用户，不要用你的另外的帐号，因为在linux里面，对用户的权限管理是相当的严格的，你所说的不能安装驱动，极有可能是因为权限不够。。
关机重启，可以用按钮，也可以用命令：shutdown -s -t 0 （关机） shutdown -r -t 0（重启）
我记不太清楚了是不是这两个，不过应该差不太多，你英文好，可以在终端里面help一下就OK了。

N卡的驱动可以到他的官方网站上去下载（N卡从大家的反应来看，是做得相当的好的，据说他的linux 下的驱动是所有显卡中做得最好的一个），这个帖子里面是教你怎么在linux下面安装软件的，在linux下安装软件很复杂，需要一大堆的依赖文件，不像windows下，只要双击setup就可以了，具体的情况，你得看解压缩后软件包里面的README或者是INSTALL说明文件，你英文应该很好，这些对你来说是小case

会看到X－lock之类的
sudo rm 删掉

果然是好办法，但是为什么ubuntu就和别的系统要搞得不一样，明明可以修改runlevel.

还有一个办法就是修改X 的xdm，但是忘具体怎么的了，哪位告诉一声？
