Iraqi security officials say at least 15 more people have been killed as insurgents continue to target Shiite pilgrims heading to Karbala for a religious observance. Police say a car bomb in southern Baghdad's Saidiya district targeted Shiite pilgrims and police today, killing 8 people. A separate attack in the mostly Shiite district of Dora killed 7 pilgrims and wounded at least 10 more.

Iran says it will attend the international conference on Iraq, which is to be held in Baghdad on Saturday. Iran's foreign minister told a news conference in Tehran today that the deputy foreign minister for legal and international affairs will lead an Iranian delegation at the meeting. Earlier Iran indicated it was in favor of participating but has some reservations.

Meanwhile here in the United States a prominent House lawmaker is proposing legislation to step up economic pressure on Iran over its nuclear ambitions. Tom Lantos, head of the Foreign Affairs Committee, detailed his plans at a hearing at which a State Department official said the United States is pursuing multiple avenues, including action at the United Nations, to resolve the issue. VOA's Don Robinson has this report.

Ma Kai, the Director of China's National Development and Reform Commission, says the Chinese government has lowered drug prices 22 times in the last few years on 1,600 kinds of drugs, in some cases several times. But despite those moves, Ma says, drugs are still so expensive the average Chinese often can't afford them. Ma was speaking Wednesday on the sidelines of China's annual legislative session, the National People's Congress, where healthcare is one of the issues to be addressed. He said when the government orders a drug's price to be lowered; some drug companies simply changed the product's name or the packaging and continue charging the same high price. He also said some hospitals rely on profits from drug sales to fund their operating costs. Ma describes the medicine market as chaotic with thousands of retailers and wholesalers to contend with. He says a comprehensive reform of the healthcare system is needed. He says the government should reform hospital funding and strengthen oversight in the review and approval of new drugs. If it does not, he says, the government can not really lower medical costs and bring tangible health benefits to the public. Daniel Schearf for VOA News, Beijing.

Indonesian rescue teams are searching for victims buried under the rubble of buildings that collapsed in an earthquake on Sumatra island, killing at least 52 people. Earlier reports said 70 people died in the disaster, but officials said today, that some of the victims were counted twice. Hospitals and other medical facilities are overwhelmed by hundreds of people injured in Tuesday's 6.3 magnitude earthquake and equally strong aftershock. [屏蔽] and aid groups are sending relief to the thousands of displaced Indonesians.

Meanwhile, an Indonesian plane has crashed landed in the central Java city of Jogjakarta, killing more than 20 people on board. VOA's Nancy-Amelia Collins has this report from Jakarta.

The Garuda Boeing 737 jet with 133 passengers and 7 crew members burst into flames after landing in Jogjakarta Wednesday morning. The burning plane overshot the runway and ended in a rice field. It was the country's second airplane disaster in two months. A spokesman says President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has ordered an immediate investigation. A man named Suarjono who survived the crash told local Metro TV the plane began to shake when it descended. He says the plane bounced along the tarmac, then caught fire as he quickly jumped out of a nearby exit.

Mulyiadi, administrator for Jogjakarta's Panti Rini hospital, says dozens of survivors were brought there for treatment. He says many of those injured were burn victims, with just a few suffering only cuts and scrapes. Nancy-Amelia Collins, VOA News, Jakarta.

Officials in Somalia say two policemen have been gunned down in the capital of Mogadishu, as more African Union peacekeepers arrive. Police and witnesses say the two officers were checking vehicles for weapons on a road leading to the airport when the attack occurred today. Officials say an investigation is under way to find the killers. Additional AU troops have been arriving in Somalia from Uganda.
