A suicide bombing in Baghdad has wounded Iraq's Deputy Prime Minister Salam al-Zubaie. A US military spokesman said Zubaie who is a Sunni Arab was taken to an American military hospital. Iraqi officials say Zubaie underwent surgery for / wounds. At least six people were killed and several others wounded in the attack took place in Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone. The bomber blew himself up as Zubaie and other worshipers left the prayer room in his residential compound.

The US House Representatives are expected to vote today on legislation that would set a deadline for bringing US troops home from Iraq. The House bill would bring the troops home by the end of August 2008. It includes 124 billion dollars in funding for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan plus nearly 25 billions dollars for domestic programs. President Bush has threatened the vital any bill that imposes conditions on his handling of the Iraq War.

Britain's Defense Ministry says Iran seized 15 British naval personnel while they were conducting routine bording operations in Iraqi waters. In a statement released today the ministry said the British bording party has just completed an inspection of a merchant ship. It said the British personnel was then surrounded and / by iranian vessels into Iranian territory waters. The British officials say they are urgently persuading the matter with Iran and have summoned Iran's ambassador to London in connection with the incident.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice leaves today for a tour of Middle East aimed reviving the stalled Israel-Palestinian peace process. Rice is scheduled to meet with Israeli and Palestinian officials as well as Egyptian President Hosny Mubarak and Jordan's King Abdullah. Speaking on Thursday President Bush said he is sending the Secretary back to the region because securing peace there is a US priority.

EU chief Jose Manuel Barroso said Friday Europe needs a vision to inspire its citizens for the next 50 years. He took part in the ceremony at Italian / in Rome to mart the European Union's 50th birthday. Its founding treaty was signed in the city. S. K. has more from Rome.

European Union President Jose Manuel Barroso and other dignitaries and representatives of the 27 EU member states took part on Friday celebrations at Italian Senate to mark the Treaty of Rome which initially established the European Community in 1957. Six nations from Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxemburg launched Europe's common market. In Berlin this weekend, a summit of heads of stating government will be held to mark the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome. At weekend summit EU leaders will issue a declaration they hope will infuse new life into the European project. The declaration is expected to set a date of 2009 for the block to overhaul institutional structures. Authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo have issued an arrest warn for former vice president Jean-Pierre Bemba on charges of high treason. The warn is to issue today as government troops battled soldiers loyal to Bemba for a second day in the capital Kinshasa. There are reports of casualties but no exact numbers are available yet. A spokesman for the UN mission in Congo says the military has gained / in the battle and some of Bemba's supporters have surrendered. Bemba himself took refugee in the South African Embassy Thursday when the fighting erupted.

Witnesses in Somalia's capital say a plane has crashed after takeoff from Mogadishu's airport. Details on the plane and the cause of the crash were not immediately clear. Earlier today a Somalia clan sad it had reached ceasefire with Ethiopian forces following two days of fighting in the capital. Elders of the H clan say both sides have agreed to move their forces away from the frontlines after this week's fighting. The clan is the source of many the Islamic insurgents who have been battling the Ethiopians and many Somali government allies.
