European reigning champions Barcelona kicked off the defence of their crown in perfect style with a 5-0 win over Levski Sofia on Tuesday, while Chelsea and Bayer Munich also scored impressive wins.

  Internazionale, another favorite, were stunned 1-0 by Sporting in Portugal thanks to a goal from Marco Caneira in the 64th minute.

  Spanish giants Barcelona proved a cut above everybody in Europelast term and they seem intent on retaining their crown as Levski Sofia were ruthlessly put to the sword.

  Andres Iniesta and Ludovic Giuly scored fine first half goals to set Barca on their way and they were handed a third just after the interval as Levski keeper Georgi Petkov spilled the ball at the feet of Carles Puyol who made no mistake from three yards.

  Samuel Eto'o is Barca's main attacking threat and he prodded home from the edge of the box on 58 minutes and Ronaldinho capped a fine day at the office for Frank Rijkaard's charges with a late fifth.

  Chelsea are seen by many as the main threat to Barca and they produced a professional performance in beating Werder Bremen.

  The Blues were gifted their opener on 24 minutes, as Petri Pasanen fell over the ball on the edge of his box and Michael Essien pounced.

  Werder had chances to level, but failed to convert and they were rocked on 68 minutes as Michael Ballack slammed home from the spot after a push in the box on Didier Drogba.

  Liverpool were beaten by Everton in the Merseyside derby at the weekend and they failed to bounce back as PSV Eindhoven stood firm in a 0-0 draw at the Philips Stadion.
The Reds did not lose any ground in Group C as the game between Galatasaray and Bordeaux ended goalless.

  Second half goals from Claudio Pizarro, Roque Santa Cruz, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Hasan Salihamidzic lifted Bayern Munichto a 4-0 win over Spartak Moscow.

  The German giants were lacklustre in the first half, but Felix Magath's team-talk did the trick as goals on 48 and 52 minutes set them on their way to victory, which was secured by an excellent strike from Schweinsteiger and a late goal from Salihamidzic.

  The game of the evening took place in Greece, as Valencia beat Olympiakos 4-2.

  Michael Konstantinou fired Olympiakos ahead on 28 minutes, but a Fernando Morientes-inspired Valencia roared back.

  The Spaniard failed to shine at Liverpool, but he proved his class back in Spain as he netted a hat-trick (34, 39 90). Raul Albiol also found his way onto the scoresheet to ensure Nery Castillo's effort for the home side counted for nothing.

  A stunning volley on 64 minutes from Marco Caneira lifted Sporting to a 1-0 win over Inter.

  Roma ensured it was not all bad for Italy, as they beat Shakhtar Donetsk 4-0.

  Shakhtar had Roma on the rack for spells of their meeting in the Eternal City, but they did not take their chances and the Italians found their stride after the interval.
