Canon
Canon's big red booth goes heavy on heritage this year as the company celebrates '70 years of Canon innovation', and ten years of the successful IXUS/ELPH line. Visitors can take a trip down memory lane with a display of Canon museum pieces going back to 1937.

As usual the booth is one of the biggest and busiest at the show. Visitors are getting their first hands-on experience of the new pro flagship, the EOS 1D mark III with the new version of the EF 16-35mm F2.8 L. On the compact side of things Canon is showcasing the raft of upgrades introduced in the last few weeks. Of these perhaps the most interesting - certainly the most unusual - is the PowerShot TX1, the 7MP 10x optical (stabilized) zoom that doesn't know if it's a stills camera or a digital camcorder. It's a lot nicer in real life than the pictures would suggest, and we were surprised at how well it sits in the hand. New for '07 are the PowerShots A460, A450, A550, A560 and A570IS and the SD1000 and SD750 Digital ELPHs. There is no sign - and no word - of the much-rumoured 30D replacement.

Casio
Aside from a couple of minor upgrades to existing models (the EX-Z75 and EX-Z1050) the biggest news from Casio this year is the very cute EX-V7, which manages to cram a 7x zoom, 7MP sensor with CCD-shift stabilization and 2.5-inch screen into a very compact all-metal body. The company is also showing its cute ultra compact DLP projectors.

Delkin
Delkin continues to come up with interesting new accessories for the digital photographer. We got our first chance to look at the SensorScope (which won a DIMA innovation award this year) - a neat little sensor cleaning kit including an illuminated magnifier, USB vacuum and sensor cleaning 'wands'. New for PMA are a Cardbus II UDMA adapter, with a claimed transfer rate of over 40MB/s, and an Expresscard 54 adapter. Finally for those who like to keep their compact camera safe and clean there's the new Snug-it rubber cover, complete with plastic LCD cover.

Fujifilm
This year Fujifilm has taken a much more compact booth, and the emphasis is firmly on the output side of the business, with wall to wall Frontier minilabs and kiosks and Xerox digital printers. There's also lots of talk about the company's imaging technologies with big screens giving live demos of Face Detection technology in action. On the camera side things are pretty quiet with only a handful of new models, most of which were actually first shown at CES in January. Of most interest are the F40fd and S5700 (S700), the 7.2MP budget 'super zoom'. Also getting their first public airing are the FinePix A610, A800, A820 and A900 entry-level models. The S5 PRO digital SLR is, of course, on show, and for the first time it's actually a shipping camera, rather than a mockup behind glass.

General Imaging
Newcomer General Imaging (the photo division of General Electric) is using PMA 2007 to officially unveil an almost bewildering range of compacts (eight in total), and a direct-connect photo printer, the P1. The cameras, which we had a chance to play with, are certainly well-specified, though the all-plastic construction suggests that they are likely to be 'priced to sell' rather than premium products. There are four new ranges, starting with the G series, which is currently only one model, the G1 - a very compact 7MP / 3x optical with a nice 2.5-inch LCD screen and ISO 1600. Next up is the A series (entry-level). Here there are two models, the A730 and A830 (7MP and 8MP respectively), both sporting 3x zooms and 2.5-inch screens. The E series has four models (E850, E1030, E1040, E1240) covering resolutions from 8-12MP and zooms from 3x to 5x. All but the E1030 have 3.0 inch screens (the E1030's is 2.7-inch) and most go all the way to ISO 3200.

Last, and certainly most interesting for us, is the X1, an 8MP 'SLR-like' super zoom compact with 12x zoom, 2.5-inch screen and optical image stabilization.

All models - even those at the entry-level - have pretty solid feature sets, including panorama stitching and this year's must-have (face detection AF/AE) and most have rechargeable Li-Ion batteries. It will be interesting to see if this new kid on the block has what it takes to carve a little share of this most competitive of markets. We'll get full information on the news page as soon as we have it.

HP
HP's large colorful booth is stuffed to the gills with printers, kiosks, cameras and accessories. New for PMA are three cameras full of HP technology goodness including on the top of the range model - for the first time as far as we're aware - a 'Pet Eye Fix' function that removes the green eyes you often get when using flash for all those lovely cat and dog portraits. Our source at HP tells us that it works with pretty much any animal except guinea pigs and rabbits (since they have red eyes anyway). To be fair some of the new technology (such as in-camera 'Touch Up' for removing skin blemishes) and image tagging is very impressive, and the cameras are very aggressively priced.

The three new models are the R837 (7MP, 3x zoomfolded optics3 screen) for $229 and the M537 and M437 entry-level cameras (6MP and 5MP respectively) - both sporting 3x zooms and 2 screens for $139 and $109.

One thing we did like (and something we'd like to see more of) is USB charging, using a standard mini USB port.

Leica
Perhaps inevitably the big draw on the Leica booth is still the M8, but there is some PMA news, with the launch of the new slimmer, higher resolution C-LUX 2, a very compact 7MP camera with 28-100mm equiv. lens, 2.5-inch screen and Panasonic's Venus III processor (the C-LUX 2 is essentially the same as the Panasonic FX30, announced in January). Also on show for the first time are some very nice leather accessories for the company's compact camera range.

Lexar
For once it's SD (Secure Digital) cards that get prime billing on the Lexar booth, with the launch at PMA of two new 4GB SDHC cards, the Professional 133x and Platinum II. Today Lexar also announced a new 4GB Platinum II CompactFlash card and Memory Stick PRO Duo media in 2 and 4GB capacities. And if you don't find memory cards that exciting the Lexar booth has a 'wheel of fortune' for visitors with the chance to win T-shirts and stuff.

Update: New products also launched at PMA include UDMA 300x CompactFlash cards (in 2, 4 and 8GB capacities), a Professional UDMA FireWire 800 Reader (which we saw in action, and boy - is it fast), a Professional UDMA Dual-Slot USB Reader (for CompactFlash and SD) and a new version of the company's excellent Image Rescue Software. Version 3 adds a redesigned interface, simplified recovery process, live support and the ability to rescue deleted video and audio files in addition to photos.

Nikon
Inevitably the main focus of attention on Nikon's busy booth is the new D40X, which takes the successful formula established with the D40 and throws in a 10MP sensor and 3fps shooting. The other big draw is the new P5000, the nearest Nikon has got to producing a 'serious' compact for a couple of years. The 10MP P5000 is actually a very nice little camera, and though there are some question marks over the spec (the lens range is a little conservative, there's no raw), it does offer a much more compact alternative to Canon's G7. Also getting their first public airing are new L series (L10, L11, L12) and S series (S50c, S200, S500) Coolpixes, many featuring image stabilization.

Visitors to the stand get the opportunity to try out the new cameras by shooting a woman painting a mural, to listen to talks by Frans Lanting and to look at some stunning large format prints. There are also plenty of demos of the latest version of Capture NX.

Nokia
Once again Nokia is exhibiting at PMA in an attempt to persuade visitors that a cellphone can replace a point and shoot camera because it has almost as many pixels. The new N95 is certainly a step in the right direction, with a 5MP camera, autofocus and some fairly sophisticated controls, but we think they're going to have to get a lot faster - and a lot better - to really compete with a dedicated stills camera (even a budget one). Also on show is the N93i, complete with MPEG-4 video capture, 3.2 MP stills and Carl Zeiss 3x optical zoom lens.

Olympus
Although information on the E1 successor is still fairly scant there is at least a more finalised mockup on show, with Olympus promising the camera will arrive 'sometime this year'. For those more interested in what's available here and now the two new E-system SLRs get a lot of booth space, and are attracting a lot of attention. The E-410 and E-510 are surprisingly compact and are well-specified and nicely built - and could be just the shot in the arm the 4/3 system needs in the face of such tough competition from the 'big two'. On the compact side the star of the booth - and one of the undoubted highlights of the show - is the SP-550UZ, the world's first (and so far only) stills camera with an 18x zoom. Also seen for the first time in public are the other recently-announced additions to the Olympus compact range, including four new entry-level FE models (one of which boasts an ISO 10,000 option) and three upgrades to the Mju/Stylus range (the 760, 770SW and 780). To prove the 770SW's all-weather credentials visitors can see a couple of them frozen in the center of a slowly-melting ice sculpture. We'll pop back at the end of the show and find out if they're still working...

Panasonic
Panasonic got in early with its pre-PMA announcements at the end of January, and there's nothing new this week. As the company continues to grow in importance in the photo industry so its booth gets bigger every year, and this is no exception.

Visitors are taking the opportunity to try out the new FZ8, TZ2 and TZ3, plus a raft of FX, LZ and LS series upgrades. The booth itself is designed to show how rock n roll Panasonic is with electric guitars, live stage performances and the kind of hot rod motorbikes usually ridden by middle aged men sporting ponytails. Groovy.
