Preliminary results from the general elections in Montenegro suggest a victory for the governing coalition which led the country to independence early this year. But its majority looks likely to be narrow. Independent election monitoring organization said the turnout appeared to be significantly lower than when the country vote to break away from its union with Serbia in May. NC reports from the Montenegro capital Podgorica.

The election monitoring organization, the Center of Democratic Transition, said its initial results suggested the ruling coalition led by the Prime Minster Milo Djukanovic would win 41 seats in the 81-seat/ State Assembly giving it an absolute majority. The opposition third parties are predicted to gain 23 seats. But these are only preliminary results and have not been confirmed officially by the state election commission. If the figures are accurate it would mean Milo Djukanovic would have won another four-year term in office. For the past 15 years he has dominated Montenegro politics serving without interruption as either prime minister or president.
