The Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has said he is ready to meet the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to advance peace efforts. Mr. Olmert said the meeting will be held without preconditions but he said no date for talks and said the release of the Israeli soldier held by Palestinian militants would be on his agenda. Mr. Olmert was speaking at a news conference after talks in Jerusalem with his British counterpart Tony Blair, who himself is due to meet Mr. Abbas later on Sunday, but not members of the Hamas-led government. The foreign minister of Hamas-led Palestinian government Mahmoud al-Zahar said he was skeptical about Mr. Olmert's offer of a dialogue.
"As a matter of fact, to the Palestinians, the talk negotiation has become worn out. Negotiations have been held thousands of times as countless meetings, but the result was zero. So if we returned to negotiations, we would return to square one, where Israel voice fourteen reservations about the roadmap relating to the Palestinian people’s cause. So the halt to the matter is what this enemy has to offer the Palestinian people. "
