Pope Benedict has met with diplomats from prodominantly Muslim countries and said both Christians and Muslims must work together against intolerance and violence. The meeting at Pope's summer residence outside Rome was aimed at defusing Muslim anger over a paper address about Islam. Serdina Castle Franko reports from the Vatican.

Speaking in French Pope Benedict ensured 21 Muslim diplomats that he has esteem and profound respect for Muslim's believers. He was addressing them at the pope's summer residence and Castel Gandolfo,also present were Italian Islamic religious leaders. The Pope told them that religious dialogue and interculture dialogue are necessary to build a world of peace. He said Christians and Muslims must learn to work together against intolerance and violence. Pope Benedict said that following the work of his predecessor John Paul II he would like to see relations between Muslims and Christians develop further in a spirit of sincere respect for dialogue. After his speech, the Pope personally greeted each one of the envoys. The meeting was organized by the Vatican to ease tension between Rome Catholics and \ Muslim world. Islamist militiamen in Somalia have opened fire on demonstrators in the southern port of Kismayo, killing one person and wounding two. Witnesses say the Ismalist gunmen fired at thousands of demonstrators who took to the streets today to protest the city's the malicious takeover of the city. The protestors burned tires and shouted anti-Islam slogans.

China's ruling Communist Party has fired its top leader in Shanghai for alleged corruption. The move is a bold measure by President Hu Jintao who analysts say is consolidating his power ahead of the expected major changes in the party leadership next year. VOA's Louis Romere reports from Beijing.

China's Communist leadership on Monday announced Chen Liangyu had been dismissed from his post as Shanghai Communist Party Secretary. Chen is now under investigation for allegedly mishandling hundreds of millions of dollars in city pension funds and other charges including nepotism. Chen's dismissal is a part of probe going on since July of corruption in Shanghai. Monday's announcement carried by the Xinhua state news agency said Chen's firing demonstrates the leadership's resolve to build a clean party and fight corruption. President Hu Jintao has made fighting graft at top priority. And political analysts say his administration has much to gain for publicizing the removal of corrupt officials. Thailand's new military rulers say they will appoint a civilian prime minister after they issue an interim constitution this week. A leading general said today the new government will then appoint a council to draft a permanent constitution, paving the way for elections in about 8 months. The leaders of last week's military coup have also set up an anti-graft committee to investigate allegations of government corruption under deposed Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Police in southern Afghanistan say the head of the Women's Affairs Department in Kandahar province has been guned down outside her home. Authorities in Kandahar say an unidentified gunman on motorbikes shot and killed Safi Ama Jan as she was about to leave for her office today. No one claimed responsibility but the attack was similar to other killings carried out by Taliban insurgents.

Pakistan's military ruler President Pervez Musharraf has left off rumors of an attempted \ coup against him, while he was in the United States, saying his country is not a banana republic. The rumors began Sunday when Pakistan suffered a nationwide power blackout. Uncertainty was further fueled by news of a surprised medical checkup on the general. In Islamabad, Pakistani military officials quickly dismissed the coup rumors and said power outage was not caused by sabotage.

Sri Lanka's navy says about 70 Tamil Tiger separatists were killed when they sank 11 rebel boats loaded with men and weapons in a battle off the country's east coast. Reports from Colombo say it was one of the largest battles in Sri Lanka since fighting in August left hundreds dead. The sea battle began late Sunday when the navy says it spied 25 rebel boats sailing south.
