Taiwan President's son-in-law jailed

THE Taiwanese president's son-in-law Chao Chien-ming has been sentenced to six years in prison and fined 30 million Taiwan dollars ($A1.18 million) for insider trading, a court spokesman said today.
Chao, a doctor suspended by the National Taiwan University Hospital over the scandal, was convicted of making gains valued at $T4.27 million ($A167,900) through the illegal deal, said Liu Shou-song of the Taipei district court.
Chao's father Chao Yu-chu drew a five-and-a-half year prison term in the same case and was given a further three years in jail for embezzling $T11 million ($428,000) in political donations to the president. He was also fined $T30 million ($A1.18 million), Mr Liu said.
The verdict was the latest blow to the embattled President Chen Shui-bian, whose wife is on trial on corruption and forgery charges for allegedly embezzling $T14.8 million ($A576,800) from state funds for personal use.
The pair did not show up at the court and are expected to appeal against the rulings.
“Chao Chen-ming failed to behave decently as a member of the first family ... using his power and influence to seek personal gains,” according to the verdict.
“Insider trading disrupted economic order and damaged the principles of just and fair business operations,” it said.
Prosecutors had originally sought a nine year jail term for Chao Chien-ming and a 10 year imprisonment for his father for making illegal gains of $T29.49 million ($A1.15 million) through insider trading.
Five other defendants involved in the same scandal received jail terms ranging from 18 months to four years and three months.
Chao was arrested in May on suspicion of insider trading and taking bribes and was later released on bail of $T10 million ($A389,500).

so far , in mainland china , not any one of the top officials or their family have been trailed and put into jails , even though they corrupt
