President Bush has signed into law a controversial bill which permits the tough interrogation of terrorism suspects and the naval prisoners held at Guantanomo Bay in Cuba to be put on trial. Under the new legislation, the Guantanomo detainees can be tried in military tribunals using evidence obtained through coercion. Mr. Bush called it a vital tool which he said would protect the American people. Here is our Washington corrspondent JC.

Speaking just before he signed the law, President Bush emphasized that it would save Ameirican lives and allowed those behind the 9/11 attack to be prosecuted. On three occasions during the speech, he mentioned the name of CSM, the presumed mastermind behind those attacks and one of the high profile CIA prisoners recently transferred to Guantanoma Bay. With an eye to international criticism of the camp and the CIA program, Mr. Bush said the law sent a clear message that Ameirica is decent and patient and fair.

The president of Iraq, Jalal Talabani has welcomed report that an influential panal of White House advisors may recommend that Syria and Iran be invited into a Iraq to help reduce the violence. Mr. Talabani told the BBC that help from Iran and Syria would spill the beginning of a end to terrorism in his country within months. The American panal is also reported to be in favor of an early and face withdraw of US-led troops from Iraq.

China and France, whose leaders are due to meet in Beijing next week, have all warned North Korea not to do anything that might worsen the situation following its recent nuclear test explosion. China said it might stop providing oil and grain to North Korea if it carried out any more provocative actions. And France said a second nuclear test would be an act of extraodinary irresponsiblility on the part of Pyongyang. The United States nuclear envoy, Christopher Hill, said by alienating China, North korea was losing its closest ally.

A man, claiming to be a formal member of the J militia of the Sudanese region of Darfur says he is fighting with direct support and orders from the Sudanese authorities.
