5come5帮你背单词 [ food /fu:d/ n. 食物 ]

It's 15 hours universal time and here is the news from the Voice of America.
I'm Peter McClellan from the VOA news center in Washington.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has disputed media reports that say North Korean leader Kim Jong-il has pledged not to carry out further nuclear tests. Rice made the comment to reporters on the flight to Moscow where she met with top Russian officials on Saturday. Media reports from the region have said the North Korean leader spoke about the pledge to Chinese officials during a recent visit. He also was reported to have apologized for the October 9th nuclear test. But Rice said she met Chinese officials in Beijing on Friday and that there was no mention of Kim Jong-il's purported statements.

President Bush is reviewing the situation in Iraq with civilian and military leaders at the White House on Saturday. The president, Vice President Dick Cheney and Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld are having a videoconference with top military commanders in the Middle East and Iraq. In the president's weekly radio address on Saturday, Mr Bush acknowledged that bringing security to Baghdad costs a high price and casualties.

"Side by side, Iraqi and American forces are operating in the city's most violent areas to disrupt al-Qaeda, capture enemy fighters, crack down on IED makers and brake up death squads. As we engage our enemies in their strongholds, these enemies are putting up a tough fight."

And in his weekly radio address, President Bush says he will make every necessary change to the country's strategy in Iraq to ensure success and combat Iraq's violence.

And in a violence, heavy fighting in Amara, a southern Iraqi city, Iraqi troops have been deployed to the city to protect a fragile truce after two days of clashes involving police and Shiite militia fighters. Witnesses say shops and government offices reopened on Saturday while army units men check points around the city.

Iran has called on western representatives to return to talks on its nuclear program. Foreign Minister Manoucher Mottaki told reporters on Saturday Tehran sees no logic to suspending uranium enrichment. He said Iran has the right to enrich uranium because of its membership in the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. He added that Tehran is ready to discuss the reasons for its actions.

Georgia's President Mikheil Saakashvili has ruled out any plans for any military action to break away republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia . In an interview with the Associated Press, Mr Saakashivili said he prefers dialogue with Russia to resolve the crisis sparked by pro-Russian separatists in those regions.

The Sudanese army has denied that its forces are badly demoralized after losing 2 key battles against rebels in Darfur. The comments from the army followed comments made by a top United Nations envoy in Sudan. For VOA, Noel King has more on this report from Khartoum.

United Nations special representative to the Secretary General Jan Pronk wrote on his web blog last week that the Sudanese army is in a state of disarray in Darfur. Pronk charged that some Sudanese troops are refusing to fight and he said some generals have been fired. A Sudanese armed forces spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Sawarmy Khalid denied Pronk's report that the army has suffered defeat in Darfur. He told VOA that the armed forces want Pronk to leave Sudan.

"Jan Pronk passed the fear in the affairs of the Sudanese army ..."

The spokesman also charged that Chad continues to support rebels in Darfur. Sudan in August began a military offensive against rebels in the region who have refused to sign onto a peace agreement with the Sudanese government. Noel King for VOA news, Khartoum.

Military officials in Sri Lanka say the Navy has destroyed two Tamil Tiger rebel boats off an island in the country's north, killing 6 rebels. The military says Navy patrol boats opened fire on the rebel vessels on Saturday after they were spoted heading toward the Jaffna Peninsula.

India has arrested the soldier for allegedly handing secret military documents to a Pakistani official sparking a new diplomatic controversy between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.

Witnesses in Somalia say government troops seized control of a strategically located town Saturday after a firefight with pro-Islamic militias. The fighting occurred in the town of Buurhakaba, 60 kilometers southeast of Baidoa. The town lies between the capital Mogadishu and Baidoa.
