BBC world news with Joe Mackintoch.

The head of the United Nations' mission in Sudan Jan Pronk is preparing to leave the country after being ordered out by the government. Ministers had been angered by an article published by Mr. Pronk on his personal website in which he said the morale in the army was low after two heavy defeats by rebels in the western Darfur region. Officially Mr. Pronk is going to New York on Monday for consultations with the UN Secretary General Kofi Anna, but the BBC Khartoum correspondent says there is no expectation in Sudan that he'll return. The Sudanese Foreign Minister S.O said Mr. Pronk had proved unable to meet his responsibilities.
"It is not his right to comment, the second thing, the false information he is giving and the indexterity ?? got nothing to do with it, enough is enough, ????, which we should be a new term for them solving problems other than creating problems."

Reports from Chad say fighting has broken out again in the east of the country. Humanitarian workers say armed rebels entered the town of G in about 60 vehicles, they say the rebels are in control of the town, and possibly two key routes. But a Chadian government spokesman said government forces had repelled the rebels from G.

Voting has ended in a referendum in Panama to decide whether one of the world's most important shipping routes, the Panama Canal should be expanded, so it can be used by larger vessels. Early reports show an overwhelming majority voted in favor, the modernization project costing around 5 billion dollars would involve building another set of locks at the Pacific and Atlantic ends of the canal. From the canal in Panama City, D Kennedy reports.
With just over 40% of the votes counted, those in favour of a wider Panama Canal are leading by 80% to 20%. If that trend continues, it will be a clear victory for the "yes" campaign. They want the government to go ahead and build new channels and new locks at either end of the canal which connects the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. The government says the expansion is needed because ships are getting bigger. And as the economies of China and India are expanding rapidly, they need easy shiping access to their markets in North America, Europe and elsewhere.

Officials in Iraq say at least 13 police recruits have been killed and 24 injured in an ambush outside Baghdad, the volunteers were on their way to the Iraqi capital in buses when they were attacked, at least 12 more people have died in other incidents across the country. From Baghdad, H S reports.
Two buses carrying around 80 police volunteers were attacked in M near Bakuba, northeast of Baghdad. A police source told the BBC that a roadside bomb exploded, killing one volunteer immediately, he said that the buses then came under small arms fire which killed a dozen more. It's not known what happened to the other passengers. US troops who went to investigate found that the bodies had been booby-trapped. The source also told us that the volunteers had joined the police force from the Mahdi army Shiite militia, and they were in the buses because they were evacuating their base after coming under sustained motor and rocket attack.

The United Nations in the Afghan government have warned that nearly 2 million people in Afghanistan's troubled southern provinces will need food aid this winter because of shortages caused by drought, they have appealed for more then 40 million dollars emergency funds in addition to an appeal in July for 76 million dollars.

The Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov must face his main rival, the far-right candidate O.S in a run-off vote next Sunday because of a low turnout in the country's presidential election. Vote turnout was only around 35%, well below the 50% required for an outright victory. President Parvanov who oversaw negotiations for Bulgaria's entry to the European Union at the beginning of next year won a far great share of the votes than Mr S.

The most successful driver in grand prix history Michael Schumacher of Germany has finished the last Formula One race of his career, at Brazilian grand prix in Sao Paulo, he finished 4th after an unlucky start. Mark D reports from Ferrari's homeland Milan.
The banner blew the winner's podium read ‘/ Michael’, but Michael Schumacher wasn't there to read it, he had done his brilliant best deploying his way back after early puncture let-in last in the field to finished the fastest man on the track and 4th. To many Italians, there was a sense of anti-climax to Michael Schumacher's final race, he had in any case already said "arrivederci" in the second best possible way, announcing his retirement after winning the Italian grand prix in Style at Monza.

That report was by Mark D, for as more news in the summary at 23:30 GMT, but that's it from BBC world news.
