New details are coming to light about that missing US soldier in Iraq. An Iraqi woman who says she is his mother-in-law has come forward to say he married her daughter in August. She tells the Associated Press the couple honeymooned in Egypt, yet such a marriage would violate military regulations. The woman says the Iraqi-American soldier was visiting his wife a week ago today when Shiite militiamen took him. She says several of his in-laws struggled with the gunmen, but couldn’t stop the abduction.

Federal forces have pushed out striking teachers in Oaxaca, Mexico. Demonstrations have been going on for the last five months. Teachers are striking because they want higher wages. It’s affecting about a million students. A majority of Mexico’s Chamber of Deputies has also demanded the resignation or suspension of Oaxaca state governor. They say the governor isn’t handling the situation properly and that it’s having a negative impact on the popular tourist destination.

Heavy monsoon rains have been lashing around Sri Lanka since Thursday. Now tens of thousands of people have been displaced, and at least 14 people are dead. There is major flooding in some areas as well as landslides which are blocking roads.

Southern California’s deadly wildfire may be fully contained by tonight. State officials say calmer winds are helping firefighters control the flames near Palm Springs. Officials today lifted mandatory evacuation order to allow hundreds of people to return home. The fire has killed four firefighters and burned more than 40,000 acres since it broke out Thursday. A fifth firefighter remains hospitalized in critical condition.

It was good news for kids but bad news for buses. Thousands of students in Waterbury, Connecticut got the day off today after vandals damaged 40% of the area’s school buses. The superintendent office says 22 buses were broken into. Fire extinguishers were sprayed inside and graffiti were scribbled inside and out.
