The proposed head of Bangladesh's interim government has decided not to take up the post amid deadly protests by opposition parties, critical of his appointment. Former Supreme Court Chief Justice KM Hasan was to have been sworn in as caretaker leader on Saturday to prepare for January elections. But a presidential spokesman said Hasan informed officials he would not take over from outgoing Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. Earlier reports quoted a presidential spokesman as saying Hasan was too ill to appear for the swear-in ceremony. But the later announcement provided no details.

Secretary General of the United Nations Kofi Annan says his envoy to Sudan will keep his job until the end of the year and may make a symbolic return visit. Sudanese authorities expelled senior envoy Jan Pronk last week after he noted the government forces in Darfur were in disarray. VOA's correspondent at the UN Peter H. reports Pronk is leveling fresh charges against Khartum.

Special envoy Jan Pronk briefed the Security Council Friday on what he called dire conditions in Darfur and on events that led Sudan to expel him. Pronk was given 3 days to leave the country last week after noting on his personal website that the Sudanese army had suffered heavy losses in Darfur. In comments Friday, he accused Sudanese authorities of violating UN resolutions by mobilizing Arab militias known as Janjaweed that have been accused of genocide.

"The militia and the general are not disciplined they kill in retaliation (1)

After speaking to Pronk, Secretary General Annan said he retains full confidence in the envoy. Sudan's UN ambassador Abdalmahmood Abdalhaleen says Khartoum considers Pronk history and accused him of abusive behavior. Peter H., VOA news, the United Nations.

Chad is accusing Sudan of carrying out air strikes on four border villages. The accusation comes days after Chad accused Khartoum of backing forces with the rebel union of forces for democracy in development, which attacked 2 Chadian towns recently.

Thousands of people have rallied in Somalia to condemn the reported presence of Ethiopian troops in the country. Islamist leaders called the rallies on Friday in Mogadishu and other cities to urge holy war against neighboring Ethiopia. They described Ethiopia as a Christian power seeking to invade mostly Muslim Somalia.

The US military in Iraq says American troops killed a suspected terrorist and captured a terror operative during a raid south of the capital Baghdad. The military says the militant detained in Saturday's raid is believed to be responsible for bringing foreign fighters into Iraq. Several other suspected insurgents were also detained. Meanwhile, the US military says a marine died Friday from injury sustained in combat in Al Anbar province that brings this month troop death toll to 98, making it one of the deadliest months in Iraq for the American military since the March, 2003 invasion.

A state-run newspaper says Iran has officially confirmed that it's stepped up uranium enrichment by injecting gas into a second network of centrifuges. But the Iran Daily quotes the deputy of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization as saying the increased enrichment started in the last two weeks. He also said inspectors with the United Nations visited the new network last week. Iran semiofficial-Student news agency quoted unnamed sources in a report Friday that said Iran had doubled its enrichment capacity and President Bush was quick to respond.

"But whether they double it or not, the idea of Iran having a nuclear weapon is unacceptable. And so unacceptable the United States in it and so unacceptable the nations will work with the United Nations to send a common message."

Britain, France and Germany have proposed a draft UN Security Council resolution that would impose sanctions on Iran for its nuclear program and refusal to suspend enrichment activities.

Police in Thailand say insurgents have shot dead 3 people in southern Thailand as the country's new interim Prime Minister made his first visit to that troubled region. Police say militants shot and killed a rubber plantation worker before dawn on Saturday as he was riding a motorcycle.

In the World Series, the Saint Louis Cardinals have won Major League Baseball's World Series, beating the Detroit Tigers 4-2 on Friday night.
