Iraqi police say they have found 56 bodies in Baghdad at a 24-our period from Thursday to Friday morning. The bodies are apparently the latest victims of surging sectarian violence in Iraq. The US military says coalition troops killed 13 suspected insurgents and detained 1 person in raids near Mahmudiyah, south of the capital. It says explosives, hand grenades and explosive-rigged vests were found in the area. Earlier the US military said 4 American service members died in attacks Thursday in Iraq, Iraqi officials also cancelled all military leave today ahead of Sunday’s expected verdict trial of Saddam Hussein for his alleged role in the killing of about 150 Shiite villagers in the 1980s. In other news from Iraq today Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki met US National Intelligence Director John N in Baghdad.
Two women were killed today and about 10 others wounded after Israeli troops fired on a group of women acting as human shields to protect Palestinian militants undersieged by Israeli forces in a mosque in the Gaza Strip. VOA’s Jim Teeple reports from Jerusalem in a separate incident Palestinian authorities say 4 Hamas members were killed in Gaza city when an Israeli missile struck them.
Gunfire sparked panic as a large group of women marched toward the mosque in the Gaza town of Beit Hanun which Israeli forces entered on Wednesday as part of a campaign to stop Palestinian militants from launching homemade Kasam rockets at Israel. The women had answered a call made on a local radio station to gather at the mosque where a number of Palestinian militants have been underseiged for a day by Israeli forces. More than 20 Palestinians, most of them militants have been killed in the fighting in Beit Hanun. S, a senior Palestinian official told VOA it’s time for the international community to intervene in Gaza. “The situation in Gaza, in Beit Hanun especially is very grave, I was conducted just a few minutes ago by the director general, the hospital in Beit Hanun who’s told me that it has tens of people wandered by who didn’t have running water any more.” Israeli troops say they are investigating the matter but say their forces fired at armed Palestinians. Jim Teeple VOA news Jerusalem.
African leaders have gathered in Beijing for a summit with top Chinese officials expected to focus on strengthening economic and political ties. The China-Africa summit begins on Saturday though high-level meetings took place today. China is expected to announce a package of aid and trade for Africa during the next two days. Trade between China and Africa’s 53 nations grew 10 fold in the past decade expected to reach 15 billion dollars this year. The forum is one of the biggest diplomatic events ever hosted by China. About 40 African leaders will be in attendance, the most controversial element of the summit for many will be the presence of the Sudanese President El-Bashir and his counterpart from Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe, both leaders have been accused of growth human rights violations.
A top Russian diplomat says Moscow will not back European draft resolution on Iran on its nuclear weapons program at the United Nations Security Council. Russia’s deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Alexeyev told the Interfax News Agency that Russia cannot support the resolution in its current form. The comment comes amid consultations at the UN Security Council on a draft resolution proposed by Britain, France and Germany that could impose economic and trade sanctions on Iran. The United States and European powers favor actions to punish Tehran for failing to comply with the council’s demands to hold Uranium enrichment. US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is urging the Security Council to Impose sanctions on Iran immediately.
Sri Lanka’s Tamil Tiger bases in the north and east were pounded by the Sri Lankan air force for the third straight today. A militant spokesman told reporters the air force bombed two Tiger targets this morning, one in the eastern district of Batticaloa and the other in the northwestern district of Mannar. The rebels had not comment it on the text and there were no immediate details of casualties.
French police have placed 4 teenagers under investigations in connection with a bus attack Saturday in Marseille that left a passenger in critical condition.
