An international team of scientists says global fish stocks may be completely wiped out within 15 years if ocean species continue to be lost at their present rate. The research published in the journal Science also warns a serious knock-on consequences from the depletion of fish stocks to water quality in shorelines. Here is S.M.
The research team says their report is the most comprehensive analysis yet of the human impact on declining marine life. According to the scientists, stocks of nearly a third of fish and seafood species have collapsed already to 10% or less of 1950 levels. That trend ，they say, is accelerating. In many parts of the world, fish is a key source of food, but it's also a vital strand in the web of marine life, helping to filter seawater and protect coastlines. The researchers say beach closures because of harmful algae and even increased plugging could therefore get worse as fish stocks continue to decline.
The United States has warned citizens in Kenya and Ethiopia of what it says is a threat of suicide attacks by Islamic militants from Somalia. The alert follows the collapse on Wednesday of peace talks between the transitional government of Somalia and the Islamist movement that's taken control of most of the south. The US State Department spokesman Shawn M called on Somalia's neighbors to play a constructive role in Somalia.
"There are concerns that the current situation in Somalia might lend itself to wider violence in the region, and we are doing everything we can to seek that does not happen, we will call upon Somalia's neighbours to play a positive role in Somalia, and not use the situation in Somalia as a way to further destabilize the situation there."

The Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi has been visiting the southern city of Naples for a wave of violent crime that has left 7 people dead in the last 6 days. Security officials believed that many of the deaths are linked to the local Mafia and the government has agreed to send at least 1000 extra police to the city. Naples is a city accustomed to violence but this recent brutality has shocked everyone. There was another incident on Thursday when a 34-year-old man was attacked in the old city of Naples, he is currently in a serious condition in hospital. Some say the rising violence follow the early release in August of some 2,500 men from the overcrowded prisons in the region. Two of those murders this week had been freed under the amnesty.
