The Syrian government says the United States should stop blaming other countries for its own mistakes in the Middle East after the White House accused Syria and Iran of plotting to topple the Lebanese government. The Syrian ambassador to the United States I Mustafa said Washington's policy had failed in Iraq and Lebanon and the Americans tried to say this was Syria's fault. He said the US government should be more mature. Reporting from Washington, here is Johnathan Bill.
While the White House's said there was mounting evidence of Syrian and Iranian interference in Lebanon, it's giving few details that may in part be due to classified intelligence. The US is refusing to comment on reports that weapons are still illegally being smuggled to Hezbollah, however, Washington has expressed concern about recent comments made by Hezbollah's leader in Lebanon. The radical Islamic group wants a bigger say in the cabinet of national Unity. If talks fail, Hezbollah has threatened mass protest against the governments.

The former president of Iran M.H says American attempts to impose western style democracy on the Middle East are flawed because democracy is not something that can be exported. He said the experience of one country could not be accented to another geographical area with a different culture and conditions. Mr H who is visiting Britain said the US intervention had not stopped or eradicated terrorism in Iraq and Afghanistan but had created new forms of it in the Middle East.

The foreign minister of the transitional government in Somalia has warned that his country may be on the brink of war. A new round of peace talks had been due to start on Monday between the government and the Union of Islamic Courts. But the foreign minister has told the BBC that the Union of Islamic Courts isn't interested in serious dialogue. As R.N reports, there are now fears that Somalia could be become a regional battleground.
The Situation in Somalia is becoming increasingly tense. The Union of Islamic Courts holds sway in the capital Mogadishu and in much of the south of the country. The transitional government’s authority is restricted to the single provincial town of B. The Union of Islamic Courts is demanding that several thousand Ethiopian troops should leave Somalia. Two thousand Eritrean troops are also thought to be in Somalia backing the Islamic Courts. Both sides deny receiving any foreign support, but with a number of other countries in the region including Egypt and Saudi Arabia also vying for influence, the danger of Somalia becoming the epicenter of a regional conflict is all too clear.

At least 16 police officers have been killed in an attack on a rural police station in northern Columbia. The police command post came under fire by a group of armed guerillas which the authorities say were members of the / left wing rebel group the Fork. The Columbia Vice President Francisco Santos told the BBC that the Fork had carried out the assault as / part of its efforts to strengthen its hold on the drugs trade. The attack is the worst in many months in Columbia.

The former American presidential candidate John Kerry has apologized for controversial remarks he made about / US troops in Iraq. On Monday, Senator Kerry warned students at a University in California that if they neglected their education they might get stuck in Iraq. The comment drew sharp criticism from President Bush and Mr Kerry has apologized for what he calls "a botched joke."

Two of Pakistan's international cricket stars have been banned for their part in a doping scandal being seen as the most serious drug’s case in the history of the sport. S.A was suspended for two years and M.S was given a one-year ban when they appeared before a tribunal in Lahore. The two players gave positive tests for the steroid nandrolone last month before a major tournament in India. The tribunal was convened by the Pakistan Cricket Board the PCB and the tribunal's chairman S.H announced the bans at a news conference.
