An iraqi court has convicted Saddam Hussein has crimes against humanity and sentenced the former dictator to death by hanging setting up celeberations in shitte dominatesd areas of the country. From iraq VOA correspondent Benjamin Sand has the story.

Of visibly upsets Saddam Hussein shouted "God is great" and "Long lives Iraq" as the court chief judge delivers the final verdict. The Iraqi high tribunal convicted Saddam of ordering the killing of 148 shitte men in the villiage of Dujail just north of Baghdad in 1982. Two of Saddam's codefendants including his half brother and the former chief judge of revolutionary court were also sentenced to death. Former vice president Taha Yasin Ramadan recieved life in prison three other defendants recieved 15 years sentences and 8 was clear of all charges. the death sentences will now automatically be appealled, there is no word on when that case will begin. Security throughtout the country is on high alert as strict daytime curfew has been imposed in Baghdad and several neighboring provinces to prevent protests following Saddam's death sentence. The whitehouse is welcoming this verdict against Saddam, calling it good day for iraqis. The Saddam defense lawyer say this verdict was time to help President Bush's republican party in this week US congressional election that charged the whitehouse denies. British foreign secretary B said it's welcome news about S and his codefendence, but opposed the death penalty though. but B says it is right for the iraqi people to decide how Saddam and his aides should be punished. The united nations human rights chief is calling on Iraq not to execute Saddam even if the death sentence is upheld through appeals. Meanwhile amnesty international is also questioning the fairness of Saddam verdict. Officials of the London based human rights group say the court proceedings were marked by serious flaws was not impartial. The group also condemned the death sentence given to the ousted president and his two former aides because the organization opposes capital punishment.

China says it has signed nearly two billion dallors in deals with African nations. The anouncemnt comes on the second and final day of Beijing's gaint summit of African countries voa's L report from Beijing.

China's communist government intended this meeting to be large and showy aimed at impressing on African leaders that Beijing means business. On Sunday Beijing delivered. The official Xinhua News Agency said Chinese companies had signed 16 agreements worth 1.9 billion dollars with African governments and business. They gave no details. The agreements were signed at the meeting of Chinese and African entrepreneurs attended by leaders including Premier Wen Jiabao.

Mr. Wen says china's out reach to Africa is sincere, unselfish and has no politial conditions attached. It is percisely China's policy of providing aid and investment without conditions but it triggered critizism from some in west who say Beijing is undermining efforts to promote transparency and human right on the continent.V VOA news, Beijing.

Taiwan's embattle president chen Shuibian is refusing to resign and denying prosecutors' allegations that he and his wife embezzled state funds. In the nationally televised address today he said the corruption allegations are painful that he would quit his office if he is convicted by a judge. Last week prosecutors indicted his wife Wu Shenchen on embezzlement, forgery and perjury charges. The first lady and three presidential aides is accused of taking 450,000 dallors from a special diplomacy fund. Prosecutors say there is evidance against the president himself as well, but Mr chen is immune from criminal charges until his term ends in 2008. Meanwhile thousands of opposition supporters in Taiwan are holding protest today calling for his resignation.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has promised to continue an offensive in the Gaza Strip against Palestanian militants firing rockets into southern Israel. He said operations were on the Gaza town of Beit Harnoun which began Wednesday are not opened ended. He says Israel has no intention of though reoccupying that territory. The Army says at least one home-made rocket hit the Israeli border town of S yesterday but today rather it did not cause any injuries. Palestanian officials say Israeli forces in Gaza killed a Hamas gunman today.
