The two main parties in the United States are making a final push for vote on the eve of Tuesday's mid-term elections for Congress. The most expensive campaign in American history has been dominated by the Iraq war, with the economy and corruption scandals also big issues. The latest national opinion poll suggests that the Democrats who have to take controll of both houses of Congress are clearly ahead but with the Republicans closing the gap. President bush says Democrats are deluding themselves if they think they are going to win.

Then the people in Florida voted, the people around the country voted, the movers were need. \ Same thing's gonna happen tomorrow. Repulican's gonna turn out. it's gonna be a great victory on Nov. 7th.'
With over 40% of the votes counted in the presidential election in Nicragua, the former president Sadalize Danio lotage has a clear lead over the conservative candidate Edmondo Vanti Aligua. Mr.Lotage has pulled a little over 40% which, if reflected in the final result, will give him an outright victory.Mr. Vanti Aligua has just under 33%.

A senior official in Iraq says legislation has been drafted to allow former members of Saddam Hussein's Baath party to return to government jobs from which they were dismissed more than 3 years ago by the former American adminsitrator of the country Paul Brammer. The most senior 15 former Baath party officials considered compliciting crimes committed by Saddam Hussein will remain excluded.

Leaders of the two main Palestinian fractions have held new talks on forming a government of national unity. President Muhmud Abbas of Fatah and the prime minister Ismel Hayel of Hamas met for more than 2 hours. Alan Jonston reports from Gaza.
Hamas won Jan's parliamentary election handsomely but his government was shunned from the star by America and European union because Hamas refuses to accept Israel's right to exist. And US and Israeli economic sanctions have done considerable damage. Now though there's much talk of Hamas and Fatah being close to agreement on forming a new coalition government of national unity.

The European commission has called for an invetigation into a massive electricity failure on Saturday night that left millions of people in several countries without power. The german power company Iyon said the blackout across Europe's interlink systems have been triggered when it switched off a high-voltage line over river to allow crew ship to pass safely. From Brussels, Tim Frank reports.
The power cuts began in Germany and quickly swept through the Neverthelands, Belgium and France, spreading out to Italy, Spain, Portugal and even Marocca. The cause may have been the switching off of just one power cable over northern German river, in order to let the crew ship to pass safely underneath. In France alone, 5 million people were reportedly affected. The European union's top energy official, the commissioner Andrews Pievourt called the event unacceptable. He said they underlied the need for EU's common approach to energy security.

China has passed another milestone in the growth of its global economic influence. It's reserves of foreign currency have hit 1 trillion dollars. this massive sum has been built up by the success of China's exports which has created a huge surplus with the rest of the world. Our economic correpondent Andrew Walker reports.
This is yet another indication of China's fast-growing economic influence.Japan with around 860 billion dollars has the next largest reserves. the figure of US is less than a tenth of China's.This huge portfolio has been built up essentially as an indirect result of the surplus in China's trade with the rest of the world. The surplus would normally cause the currency Yuan to rise, but the Chinese authorities have been reluctant to allow that to happen to any greater extent,as it would undermine the competitiveness of Chese industry. To limit the rise, they have had to use Yuan to buy foreign currency, mainly dollars.
