5come5帮你背单词 [ fetus // n. 胎,胎儿 ]

Hello everyone, from the CNN world headquarters here in Atlanta. I’ m Catherine Callaway, and here is what’s happening NOW IN THE NEWS.

In a live version of his weekly address, President Bush called on voters to keep Republicans in power in Congress. With only three days left until mid-term elections, he says if Democrats become the majority party they could raise taxes quota without lifting a finger. The president says tax cuts gave the country a strong economy with low unemployment. The president and vice president are both trying to sway voters and encourage turnout before Tuesday’s election.

The Democrats want to keep voters’ focus on the war in Iraq. In her party’s weekly radio address, Pennsylvanian Congressional candidate Lois Murphy called for a new direction. She is urging voters to back the Democrats on Tuesday. Murphy said that if GOP holds on to the power the president’s strategy in Iraq which she says has failed will continue. She also says Republicans are out of touch with the American people. Murphy is looking to unseat incumbent Republican Congressman Jim Gerlach who narrowly defeated her back in 2004.

More boasting from Iran as the country’s military conducts a new round of war games. An Iranian general says that his military now has missiles that can reach nearly 900 miles and weapons that can penetrate advanced bulletproof vests. He made those comments to the state-run news agency.

Elsewhere in the Middle East. Several Arab countries are looking to nuclear energy. A report on Saturday from the Middle East Economic Digest says that at least six countries are looking to diversify energy sources and see nuclear power as a good solution. Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Morocco and Algeria are considering nuclear power for projects to get fresh water. Analysts say besides the need for alternative energy many countries are also concerned about Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Well, the Denver Police Department may look into the allegations against evangelical leader, the Reverend Ted Haggard. It plans to contact those involved for information on whether a crime was committed. Haggard said yesterday that he bought methamphetamine from former male escort Mike Jones. He said that he never used the drug though. Haggard also says he received a massage from Jones. Jones says Haggard paid him for sex regularly over a 3-year period. Haggard denies that. Jones also said that he didn’t sell meth to Haggard directly, but did see him use it.

And for the first time ever, a woman now leads the Episcopal Church. Katharine Jefferts Schori took over the office of presiding bishop this morning in the ceremony in Washington National Cathedral. She is the first woman’s priest to lead a branch of the Anglican Communion which is facing a possible spilt over gay right issues. She supported the election of the first openly gay Episcopal bishop. She also believes that the church should be blessing sex couples
