Marketplace Report: Sun Goes Open-Source

Sun Microsystems is the creator of software that's used in 3.8 billion mobile phones, computers, medical devices and other gadgets. The company announced Monday that it will make the code for the Java software available for free on the Internet -- a surprising move from a company that once fiercely protected its software. Amy Scott of Marketplace talks with Madeleine Brand about what's behind Sun's decision.

The software company Sun microsystem anounced their new stratege today.After ten years of fierecely regarding its java technology sun now plans give it away.Market place Amy scott joins me now.
First of all ,what exactly is JAVA?
Well,Java is a programming language that developed it to create software.And it also allows that software run on your computer's desktop.Java is also used in other electronics like cellphone,medical devices, close to 4 billion computers and gadgets overall. So the code itself is not something average person really sees but sepcially you used it in internet there is a good chance you'll encounter in Java in one way or another. And why the Sun want to give it away?Laterly,Java has been under threaten from other so called open source products which software developers like becasue they are free and allow many users to treat and perfect them.Java supporters have been pressure the company for years to make it open source.But Sun micorsystem actually make most of its money selling hardware and software programmes.
Analyse Michale with his research from Red monks said by giving Java away Sun hopes to draw more customers to its other products.
"Java is something that sun used to sort of make it larger to echo system thrive and operate effectively.So the more popular and more widespread Java is ,*,the more benefits that sun gets.And sun will continue make money on Java,the free licences requires users to share any changes they make to java with the public.
And K says developers don't want do that ,will still be able to buy commercial licences from Sun.
Amy, does sun's move put any pressure on other software giant microsoft?
Well,it's interesting,you know Java was created in part to undermine microsoft's dominates.And Java was compatible with other operating systems.And microsoft venturely paid sun 2 billion dollars to settle a dispute over microsoft's effects to sword java.The two companies have since their peace and if anything sun's move ,if they works, may help the company stay competitive.It has been undergoing a major turn around effort with lay-off and ,you know,efforts create new products.It losts billions of dollars after the .com bust. And sun is hoping its tie-up with the growing open-source movement will help their rebound.
