Well it is a big problem for parents when the kids aren't feeling too well, do you still bring them to day-care? A new study tried to find out the parents are making the right decisions based on official medical guidelines. Doctor Karen Hopkins is a professor of pediatrics at New York University School of Medicine. Doctor Hopkins, good to see you this morning.

The upshot was that the parents tend to err on the side of the caution. Are they kept their kids home instead of going ahead and sending them in. Did that surprise you?

It did surprise me. Because people tend to think that more parents send their sick children into day-care because they need to get to work. But actually, parents are keeping more children at home than sending them in.

Yeah, and these were parents who are not necessarily well-versed in the guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatrics. The study also..ah...looked to find out how well those were being followed, and were you surprised by that?

The studying said that although these guidelines have been out for past 10 years. Pediatricians, child-care providers, that is day-care providers and parents were not that familiar with them. But when they looked at their practices, they tended to follow the guidelines, maybe by using their common sense.

Now, I wonder the other things that I thought was interesting that was... that if you took seven children, and kept them out, only one of them really had a real reason to be kept out.

What illnesses are we talking about?

We are talking about very common illnesses, like an upper respiratory track infection or a common cold. We are talking about gastroenteritis which people would consider vomiting and diarrhea. We are talking about conjunctivitis, or pink eye. (Oh yeah) We are talking about skin infections.

We are...I want to put up these guidelines because it is kind of confusing for parents to know whether you should go ahead and keep you kid at home. You probably should do so if the temperature is above 100. They are very low energy; they are vomiting several times in a short period of time; they are crying ineradicable, just not a good idea to send your kid in. What about if they have diarrhea?

If they have diarrhea, the guidelines say that it's okay to send the child in. The guidelines are really focused on number of time the child vomiting, say, three or four hour period.

You mentioned conjunctivitis or pink eye. Anybody who has kids knows it's so so contagious. If your child does have pink eye, should you keep them home or what about ringworm?

The thing about pink eye was very surprising. The guidelines say the child should be kept home only if what's coming out of the eye is thick and yellow.

And most of time, children start out pink eye with just red, conjunctival red eyes, and a clear eye discharge and itchy eyes. It's not usually yellow and thick. Although the time before that is when it's most contagious.
