I’m Paul W from the VOA News Center in Washington.

The 15 members of the United Nations Security Council have voted unanimously to impose new sanctions on Iran over its refusal to end its uranium enrichment program. From VOA’s New York Bureau correspondent Barbara Shasa has the details.

/ resolution increases the assets of more than 28 Iranian individuals, companies and institutions including the state-owned B, commanders of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and / control. It also places embargo on arms export and calls on members to voluntarily restrict loans and financial assistance to the government of Iran. The resolution calls on Iran comply with International Atomic Energy Agency’s requirements and return to negotiations over its nuclear program. Britain, France and Germany drafted the original resolution. British Ambassador Emyr Jones Parry says it / pleased that the Council was able to act unanimously after weeks of negotiation to send a clear message to Iran that it must comply with its legal obligations. Speaking to an interpreter Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki told the Council that suspension is not an option or a solution. “I can assure you that pressure and intimidation will not change Iranian policy.” Barbara Shasa, VOA News, New York.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair says Iran’s detention of 15 British navy personnel is unjustified and wrong, and he rejects Iranian accusations that the 15 had entered Iranian waters before they were seized on Friday. Iran says the 15 have confessed to be in Iranian waters illegally during the British say was a routine inspection of a merchant vessel on Shatt al-Arab waterway between Iran and Iraq. Britain and European Union are demanding Iran free the 14 men and one woman immediately.

Iraqi officials say a Sunni mosque was bombed at the town south of Baghdad today one day after a Shiite mosque was destroyed in the same town. At least two people were wounded in the dizzy explosion. On Saturday’s bombing 11 people were killed. Meanwhile, the US military said today that the Iraqi police arrested a man Friday and find that he detonated explosives of all the truck carrying corn. US officials say the truck was stopped near a police station about 150 meters from a water treatment plant in Ramadi.

Japanese officials say a strong earthquake out the coast of central Japan has killed at least one person and injured 150 others. The 6.9 magnitude quake struck at 00:42 Universal Time Sunday in the Sea of Japan, off the northern coast of / Island. Most of the injured were in / where more than 200 buildings collapsed and roads were blocked by landslides. Hong Kong’s Chief Axecutive Donald Tsang will serve another term in office following an election whos result for prior Deng by the Chinese government in Beijing. However, as we hearing this report from VOA’s / from Hong Kong, participants / election campaign might have pushed the former British colony somewhat caution to treat democracy. Donald Tsang did not do what candidates usually do on the election day posing for the cameras / in his hand. Although he is chief axecutive of this Chinese territory, equivalent to mayor or governor, he is not allowed to vote. Only 100 of Hong Kong’s nearly 700 million people mainly those selected by or approved by Beijing were eligible to vote Sunday and Tsang who was reelected by a vote of 649 to 123 was not one of them. The amended constitution was withdrawn before Hong Kong was handed back to China 10 years ago, promises direct election of the chief executive and legislature but it does not say when that will come about. Alan Leong, a lawyer of the elected legislator was chosen by the pro-democracy group to run against Tsang in raise the issues of might otherwise have been ignored in a prior election. As expected Leong said in his post election speech Sunday that the campaign demostrated the public desire for direct elections. / VOA News, Hong Kong.
