I'm Susan Yackee from the VOA News Center in Washington.

Suicide bombings have killed more than 30 people across Iraq in an upsurge in violence. Police said today a bomber driving a truck loaded with bricks detonated his explosives outside a police station in a predominately Sunni district of Dora in southern Baghdad. Twenty people were killed in the blast, including at least 14 police officers. A separate truck bomber today killed at least five people and wounded another thirty in a suicide attack near a Shiite mosque south of Baghdad. Iraqi officials say another suicide bomber blew himself up at a market in the northern Iraqi town of Tall Afar, killing 10 people. In western al-Anbar province, the US military says coalition airstrikes killed three armed terrorists as they tried to escape in a vehicle in a rural area. A fourth terrorist blew himself up.

In a direct challenge to President Bush, the US House of Representatives has called for the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq no later than the end of August 2008. VOA's Dan Robinson reports from Capitol Hill. The president has condemned the House action and repeated a veto threat.

Democrats succeeded in passing a measure that ties funding needed to support US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan with requirements to limit the duration of their deployments and force President Bush to certify the readiness of military units. The beginning of a withdrawal period would be triggered if the president cannot certify to Congress at two key points this year that the Iraqi government is satisfactorily reaching political, economic and security benchmarks. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi spoke to reporters after the vote. "They voted no to giving a blank check to an open-ended commitment to war without end." But any legislation containing a timetable or other conditions faces a veto threat from President Bush who condemned the House action as, in his words, "an act of political feat". "The Democratic majority in the House are showing it is willing to undermine the gains our troops are making on the ground." House Republicans assert that Democrats will ultimately be forced to accept a clean bill without troop readiness requirements or withdrawal timetables that the president will accept. Dan Robinson, VOA news, Capitol Hill.

The International Organization for Migration says it is extremely worried about new patterns of labor exploitation and human trafficking emerging in Iraq. It says some of the workers are taken against their knowledge to Iraq and others are falsely lured there by promises of good-paying jobs. Lisa Schlein reports from Geneva.

The International Organization for Migration has just repatriated five Sri Lankan migrants. It says "had been working on the conditions of servitude in Irbilin in northern Iraq". The IOM says this brings to 30 the number of Sri Lankans the agency has helped since February. IOM spokesman Jean-Philippe Chauzy says all of the Sri Lankans had been tricked into going to Iraq and, once there, forced to work under extremely difficult conditions. "They are very much exploited working 16 hours a day, seven days a week, doing menial jobs domestic servitude." Chauzy says IOM is working with Iraqi and consular authorities on ways to help these people. But he says the absence of adequate laws governing the status of foreign workers in Iraq makes it very difficult to provide help to these people. Lisa Schlein for VOA News, Geneva.

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has arrived in Egypt on the first leg of a Middle East tour aimed at putting new life into the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. Rice has said that she hopes to rally more Arab support for peace talks.

An Iranian military commander says 15 British Navy personnel in Iran's custody have admitted to illegally enter in Iranian waters. Britain insists its Navy was conducting routine anti-smuggling operations in Iraqi waters and it has demanded an immediate and safe return of the detainees.

The UN Security Council has scheduled a vote for today on a resolution that would impose new sanctions against Iran for its refusal to stop enriching uranium. The new sanctions would ban all Iranian arms exports and freeze the assets of 28 more Iranian individual and institutions.

United States says it is sending a top Treasury Department official to China to help resolve a banking dispute that has stalled nuclear disarmament talks with North Korea. Treasury officials say Daniel Glaser will travel to Beijng today to help address a frozen bank payment to North Korea.
