The authorities in Saudi Arabia say they have arrested more than 170 terrorism suspects some of whom have been training as pilots for suicide missions. The Saudi Interior Ministry said suspects, some of them foreign nationals, have been planning to attack oil instillations, public figures and military bases inside and outside the country. Here is our defense and security correspondent Robertson.
The scale of the arrest has caused some surprise in the kingdom. It’s now been more than a year since the last major attack in Saudi Arabia when Al-Qaeda unsuccessfully targeted an oil processing plant. Al-Qaeda Saudi born leader Osama Bin Laden has long boasted of his desire to attack the country’s oil industry as a way of toppling its monarchy and hurting its oil first in western allies. These latest arrest suggests Al-Qaeda though weakened by a four-year-security crackdown, is still a force to be reckoned with there.

The US military authorities say they are holding a senior Al-Qaeda operative who was arrested as he was trying to return to his native country Iraq. They say they transfer the man A. to the Guantanamo detention camp in Cuba this week. C. explains the significance of the arrest.
What we already had Osama Bin Laden, but he is relatively isolated as he tries to avoid being caught and it’s figures like A. operational commander is actually involved in planning attacks including against western target. Now, western British counterterrorism officials told me that they rank him No.3 or 4 in Al-Qaeda back senior. It seems he was arrested month ago, and held secretly by the CIA while he was interrogated, and he may as well have some quite sensitive information about Al-Qaeda’s plans, but of course like other figures he is replaceable.

The ban imposed in 2001 was used to prevent money from diamond sales fueling wars in Liberia and its neighbors. The UN said the Liberia must now sign up to the Kimberley Process which certifies that exported diamonds have not originated in conflict zones. The British Ambassador to the UN A. P. said the right conditions have now been established in Liberia. “That recognition of progress made in Liberia, the fact of these conditions proposed in the K. process are being met. Now our expectation is that Liberia would now move forward, and fully join in the Kimberley Process.”

In the parliamentary vote for a new president, the governing party’s candidate, the foreign minister Abdula /, got ten fewer votes than he needed to win outright. Reporting from A., S.
