The leader who introduced democracy and free market reforms to Russia has died. Boris Yeltsin was Russia’s first democratically elected president and basically engineered the final collapse of the Soviet Union. The Kremlin announced his funeral would be held on Wednesday the 25th. That day will also be a national day of /. The / news agency says he died of heart failure in Moscow hospital. Boris Yeltsin was 76 years old.

Iraqi Prime Minister / has ordered a halt to a construction of security barriers in a Baghdad neighborhood. But his spokesman later explained the Prime Minister was responding to groundless media reports of the walls would be permanent. Iraqi and US officials say they will continue set up the temporary barriers in order to send plague in the country.

Nigeria’s electro commission has declared the ruling party’s candidate the winner of this weekend presidential election. It says that / won by a lame slide. European Union observers say Nigeria’s election on Sunday though fell short of international standards. A top opposition politician wants the vote / and calls on parliament to impeach the president.

Virginia Tech’s students and faculties paused for a moment of silence before classes are resumed on campus. It was one week ago that the student turned a gunman, opened fire and killed 32 people before killing himself. College officials say they are simply not sure how many students will full go the last weeks of classes to stay home with their families instead.

And if you have filled up lately, you have paid big. A national survey says the gas rose more than eight cents a gallon just in the last two weeks, and nearly seventeen cents so far this year.
