Nearly all the democratic presidential candidates will be in San Diego this weekend. They'll take turns speaking before the State Democratic Party’s Convention looking for support from the Party's loyalists. NPR's Ina Jaffe reports.
Presidential hopefuls have addressed California's democratic activists in prior years, but there’s never been more at stake. When the nation's most populous state moving up its primary date to February 5th, California voters have a chance to determine the nominee. Senator Hillary Clinton speaks first on Saturday having already won a key endorsement here. The Speaker of the California State Assembly Fabian Nunez will back her sharing his strong ties to organized labor and Latino voters. Two other influential state lawmakers are set to endorse Senator Barack Obama who will speak later in the day. Also on the program are Senator Chris Dodd, former Senator's John Edwards and Mike Gravel, Congressman Dennis Kucinich and New Mexico governor Bill Richardson. Ina Jaffe NPR news.

The Turkish military is indicating it wants to get more involved in that country's presidential election process. The military is concerned that Turkey’s secular government will become more Islamist if Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul becomes President. The BBC's Sarah Rainsford reports from Ankara.
Turkish Armed Forces had put a statement this Friday, frank but strong statement on its websites. And that was discussed for many hours after that, so a real stir because this is a very firm intervention by the Turkish military into this debate about the Turkish presidential elections. The military has basically said that it's watching very closely. It's its concern. It sees itself as reminded people as the ultimate defender of secularism here. The BBC's Sarah Rainsford reporting from Ankara.

A moderate earthquake hit Kent in Southern England this morning. Officials say there was some damage, but there were no reports of any casualties. Larry Miller reports from London.
It was an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.7. It happened at 8:18 local time. The US Geological Survey calls that a shallow earthquake that occurred around 6 miles below the surface. The Fire Department says it brought down some chimneys and caused cracks in some houses. It's also knocked out power and telephone in some areas. Railroad Star says the tremor did not affect its trains that passed through the area and under the English Channel. This earthquake was not as strong as the one that hit the area in 1580. People were reportedly killed in that one. Shakespeare referred to it in Romeo and Juliet. For NPR news, I'm Larry Miller in London.

In the US, wild fires continue to burn in southeast Georgia. More than 100 homes had been evacuated, but most residents have now been allowed to return. The blaze has burned 61,000 acres. 22 houses have been destroyed.

French authorities are confirming that a French aid worker was released today after being kidnapped in Afghanistan more than 3 weeks ago. The woman had worked for an ad agency helping children in the southwest part of country. A male coworker who was also abducted apparently is still being held by the Taliban along with 3 Afghanistans who were working them.

The man suspected of killing a Peace Corps volunteer in the Philippines has confessed on local television. Douglas Bakshian reports from Manila.
Juan Duntugan told ABS-CBN television it was a case of mistaken identity. He was having a long running feud with a neighbor when Peace Corps worker Julia Campbell bumped into him from behind and she dropped a bundle of clothes. He says his mind went blank and he got a rock and hit her on the head. And it was too late when he saw it was a tourist. Duntugan, a local woodcarver apologized and said he would accept the consequences. He surrendered to police in northern Ifugao province. The body of 40-year-old Campbell of Fairfax, Virginia was found April 18 in the province where she had gone hacking to see its famous mountainside rice terraces. An autopsy showed she died from blows to the head. Local media reported her remains had been flown to the United States. For NPR news, I'm Douglas Bakshian, Manila.

New York police say they've made an arrest in the mugging of a 101-year-old woman. The suspect is a 44-year-old man also accused of robbing an 85-year-old woman on the same day. Last month’s hold up of a 101-year-old Rose Morat was captured on surveillance tape. It showed her trying to leave her apartment using a walker when a man punched her 3 times in the face and grabbed her purse. The suspect had gotten away with $33.
