    With final vote for the French presidency just 4 days away the two candidates, the conservative Nicolas Sarkozy and the socialist Segolene Royal, have held their only television debate of the campaign, watched by estimated by 20 million people. Occasionally, they attempted exchange dealt with issues, including pensions, environment and the economy. Alex Sanford sends this report from Paris.

    The most hinted and personal exchange came during the second half of the debate. Segolene Royal said Nicolas Sarkozy had reached the panicle of political immorality, accusing him of dismantling socialist majors on handicap children. Mr. Sarkozy criticizes his opponent for losing her temper, now I haven’t cherry polite, I’m just angry. There were several clashes during the two and half-hour debate on the economy, pensions and environment.

    The US House of Representatives has failed to overturn President Bush’s veto of bill, tying funding of the war in Iraq to a timetable for the withdrawal of American troops. Without the bill, the response by the Democratic Party came well short of the two thirds majorities required. Later the President met congressional leaders to try to hammer out a compromise over Iraqi policy. Jane Brown has this report from Washington.

    The democrats who control congress own the difficult position; they want to use their hold over funding to change American policy in Iraq. But they don’t want to be accused of failing to support troops in the time of war, the also know that President Bush will not sign a bill agreeing to any timetable for withdrawal. Democrat leaders refuse to be drawn on whether they will compromise on that issue, but House speaker Nancy Polucy said they remained committed to ending the war.

    The American Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who is in Egypt for a conference on stabilizing Iraq, says everything is at state, not just for Iraq but for the region as a whole. The United States hopes that the meeting of foreign ministers of more than 13 countries will make a commitment to give Iraq billions of dollars in aid and debt relief.

    The Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni has joined those in Israel calling for the resignation of the Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, following a damming report on his handling of the war in Lebanon last year. Mrs. Livni told reporters after meeting this drama but she had told them that resigning would be the right thing to do, and he proposed herself as she successor as head of Cadim Party, the main party in the governing coalition.

    Russian railways have reduced fridge to Estonia, ostensibly for engineering works and made escalating dispute about the relocation of Soviet army monument in the Estonian capital Tallinn. Russian oil and coal exporters say they are looking for alternative routs. Meanwhile, Estonia has recalled diplomats’ families from Moscow. Estonian ambassador there said program and routs have tried to storm news conference to attacker.

    British scientists say the have found an effective way to combating the MRSA super bug. The resistant strain of bacteria is responsible for death in hospitals in many countries. Researchers say that they have carried out successful trails, using to treat patients affected with MRSA. DS has this report.

Researchers at Manchester University have now found they can use the lathe from green bottle flies to combat MRSA. They have carried out trails to treat diabetic patients with foots oasis and found eventually all the cases that patients have been killed in less than a month.

    Scientists in the United States say they have devised a new way of scanning the surface of Mars for water, which offers much more accurate reading than previously obtained. They say initial data using the new method suggest up to half surface of Mars may contain ice, and the data also shows that there is consider about variation in how far below the surface ice can be found.
