    Voting has ended in regional and local elections in England, Scotland and Wails. As counting begins the election is being seen as the last electoral test for British Prime Minister Tony Blare as he prepares to leave office after 10 years in power. Our political correspondent John David reports.

    The Cuban authorities say that a military officer was killed during an attempted hijacking at Havana international airport on Thursday. The interior ministry in Cuba says army lieutenant was killed on aboard the plane as he was hijacked by two army recruits. The two men had come on deard a bus earlier on Thursday to reach the airport.

    A report from United Nations office on drug and crime has said the high rates of violent crime in the Caribbean are affecting the region's development. The report says the trade in illegal drugs has contributed significantly to the high level of violence. Bethniee Peal reports.
    The report says mad rates in the Caribbean are higher than any other region in the world and assault rates are significantly higher than average. It said drug trafficking was the core of the problem. The report said young people were particularly affected, both as victims and perpetrators of crime and violence. It said deaths and injuries among young people were a major threat to public health and economic progress across the Caribbean.

    The only man to fly all three of NASA's early space machines, Water Sharra has died at his home in California. He was 84. Edi Galicia reports from Florida.
    When Water Sharra went into a Walboterbal, the Mercury space craft in 1962 his message ... was simple. I'm having a ball up here drifting. That machine made in the third American to orbit the Earth and marked the beginning of a successful career with the space agency. Although he never set foot on the moon Water Sharra did like much of the ground works that made future machines possible. His family says he died of natural calls as he's at home in California.

    The authorities in Mexico City have made the teaching of an ancient Aztecan indigene's language required a part of the curriculum in the capital state's schools. The mayor of Mexico City said the teaching of Nowata, the official language of the Aztecan Empire would help rescue the identity of the people who found the Mexican Capital.

    And Queen Elisabeth has arrived in Virginia and start one official visit to United States of her 16 years. The Queen began the trip by addressing the state's legislature which is America's oldest representative body. She commemorates the 400th anniversary of the founding of James Town in Virginia.
