Yes, martial arts film derive from opera, but not just any opera, a unique style known as Peking opera that is being part of Chinese culture for centuries. And how did martial arts become a part of opera. Well, it occurred in the middle 1760s.

When the Manzu dynasty was taking over, they basically made Shaoling the martial illegal. Also they set about destroying the Shaoling temple. And five men, student disciples, out of, you know hundreds were able to escape, and they see that their all livelihood, their brothers, everyone is dying. And they decide to challenge the Manzu masters. And out of the ruins of charred ruins they find their weapons they found whatever specialty they want to use to express themselves in this battle, last picture battle. They trained, they trained hard, and it’s life and death, it’s a battle and you know, 3 out of 5 survive the battle, but they preserve the Shaoling law, like phoenix, like phoenix coming out its own of ashes, they found their strength from the ashes of monastery they went back to the roots to have their battle, to fight, to do something grander, bigger than yourself.

I think that’s what makes for heroes. You know, whether in real life or you know, synonymic, you always look for something there is worth fighting for. One of the 3 surviving monks of the burning of the temple was muster Xishan while the battle was taking place in 1765, he taught his skill to the traveling Peking opera actors. Jishan did this for 2 reasons, first, to continue teaching the Shaoling tradition the martial arts that Qing Empire is trying to eradicate. And secondly, describe the sees of revolt to who anyone might want to rise up against tyrant of their time. The opera players passed on this knowledge and skills as they performed in tune around the province.
