Time now for StoryCorp, this project is collecting story from every people across the country. Today we heard from Rebia Mixon-Clay in Chicago. During her interview, she remembered her first husband the Lake Frank Mixon.

I was pregnant when I met him, and he saw me and walked over towards me and he said:”you gonna be my wife”. And a year later, we just one day went down the city hall and get married. And we had no rings; He tried to give me his class ring, a big ugly thing to put on my finger. It feels like ah, ah. And I remembered come in home one day and he wasn’t there and I was note on the back of the door and said going the bedroom and look on the dresser. And I went in the bedroom look on the dresser and there was the ring box, and beautiful wedding ring an engaging ring in the box. I grabbed those ring, I don’t put them on. I just round up the house; find a new way hang out there. And when he saw me coming, he said:” did you find them?” and I said:” yeah, I was shaking the stuff as I just met him.” And I handle the ring in, he get down on one knee, and said:” Would you be my wife, really be my wife?” I say:” yeah.” He would come home and he would say, “Ah, what’s the dinner?” And I would tell him whatever was dinner going to be. And he made me feel like it was magnificent. I mean, if/ I burned popcorn, it was the best, you know. That was the kind of guy he was.

I was married him for 17 years. And we separated and he moved to Michigan. I don’t know the detail, but Frank get into an altercation they say this woman was a damsel in distress. And Frank was helping her. And the women’s boyfriend shoot him in the back.

I had my fourth child with him and he is exactly likes his father, exactly, he never talk about whisper. He is always happy and laughing. He is gentleman of all gentleman. And even my other 3 kids are like that because he had him. My oldest son, he will tell you my biological father’s name is so and so, but my daddy's name is Frank Mixon. And above the year that we separated, I still remember Frank Mixon because I honestly believe he was my first true love.
