Resurrecting the Champ is a cautionary fable that every journalistic go-getter dreaming of front page bylines would dwell to heed. But the story is loosely based on fact. The sudden reversal of fortune experienced by Josh Hartnett playing an eager-beaver sportswriter who doesn’t do his homework is fiction. That reversal following a brief moment of triumph lends the film a heavy moral traction.

Samuel L. Jackson plays a homeless man calling himself the champ, who is befriended by the journalist who turns his life into a career-making magazine cover story.

In the movie directed by Rod Lurie, the setting has been moved from Los Angeles to Denver. The best thing about the movie which deteriorates into a mawkish contemplation of father-son hero worship. Mr. Hartnett’s character separated from his wife and has a six-year-old son who looks up to him. As Mr. Jackson’s down-and-out boxer, dressed in rags, his skin crumpling like old parchment and his hair in matted salt and pepper dreadlocks. Mr. Jackson’ s champ is incandescent and entirely convincing.
