Simon Schama looks at the marital, electoral, medical and educational contributions made by women towards social change in the Victorian era. Some of the women considered in the programme, other than Queen Victoria herself, are political campaigners Harriet Stuart Mill and Annie Besant, novelist Elizabeth Gaskell, photographer Julia Margaret Cameron, social health campaigner Mary Seacole, and doctor Elizabeth Garrett.

Eventually, it was felt and laid next with Elbert as perfect queen's orders, and there she is, the clock has stopped along with heart with the prince consort.

But they hadn't, of course. Victoria might've lied next to her beloved, dressed mediaeval princess, but he of all people had known it had been progress which being a main spring of her ring. Elbert had done his best to see that it had been a force for goodness as well as greatness, that the surging movement of the machine age will be held in check by the moral anchorage of Victorian home.

The women of Britain, Victoria's sisters and daughters were all supposed to being grateful for this, debus in the warmth of half they tended. But those cozy fires kindled yellings couldn't be contained by a placid domesticity. Those were little liberators, the check book, the latch key and the bicycle, backed over the doorstep and into the street.

And you couldn't tell any longer, just how it goes would turn out.
